2001 Fiesta Mk4 Engine Light Flashing

Hi all

My friend had a 2001 Fiesta MK4, he filled up with petrol earlier (hes certain he didn't put in deisel ), later on when driving he noticed the fuel gauge had considerably dropped and his engine light is now flashing.

Hes checked oil but not sure where to go from here, any ideas?
