Fail Mot With Led Strips

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I am looking to add Blue LED Strips to the front grill of my car

Will this mean my car will fail its MOT? Obviously the lights will be off at the time of the MOT and be on a separate switch to headlights.

What do you think?

They won't fail an MOT but you will be pulled over by some of my colleagues.

Displaying anything other than white light (or amber for indicators) to the front of a vehicle is a road traffic offence.

Sorry.

So I can have white ones at the front?

Yes you're only allowed yellow lights/Amber indicator lights at the front of your vehicle. Also having blue LED's on the front of your car could I believe be classed as impersonating the police which is obviously against the law

So I can have white ones at the front?

Yes but technically LEDs arent strictly approved hence the reason the majority of them are 'for offroad use only'

Audi use Leds?

Audi use Leds?

LED's fitted originally by the manufacturer are different as they've been tested/approved for road use. Dont get me wrong ive got White LED sidelights and I've never so much as got a funny look from the police. You could also look the fit DRL's

But the police cant give me a ticket or anything for white leds? they wont actually be showing just cause a glow on the front grill thats it?

At worst I believe they'd most likely just ask you to remove them. Things like the strip LED's are realy onlymeant to be for off road use

I wasn't thinking about driving around with them on. Just when parked up?

For off road/show use that's fine, but must not be used while on public roads and definitely not while driving.

A Police Officer pulling you over for them can insist on them being disconnected/removed on the spot or could hit you with a prohibition order.

Sainsbury's car park- GOOD.

Local high street- BAD.

You can have white on the front, amber on the sides and red at the back

Blue if for emergency vehicles only (Fire, Police, Ambulance) so i would avoid it - you are asking for trouble - even if you are "off road" just getting spotted with them on is bad news because it mat be assumed they could get used on the road

it will also attract un-nessesary attention to the car

If you really must have them it may be better if you had them hidden (for example, behind the grill) and never, ever use them on the road (+ even have the switch hidden too)

And preferably white, not blue
