Spare Key

Featured Replies

I have only one key, it is the "keyless" type and includes an emergency small mechanical key that also opens the bonnet.

We recently had a very stressful event when we were about to set off to catch a plane and could not find our only key so vowed to get a spare one ASAP. I assume a Ford replacement would cost the earth but hope to find a key cutter who can reproduce the small mechanical key.

Have anyone been thro the same process.

(PS, found the key at the last moment possible and caught the pane, grandchildren had hidden it in a small model house)

The only suggestion I can make, (Having never having even seen a keyless system let alone had one), is to try a mobile locksmiths, while yes they should be able to cut the mechanical key, it's doubtful they could get the cut key to start the car.

You may be luck to pick one up from such as ebay, or a scrappy and have that re-programmed to your car, but you will still need to have the mechanical key changed in the replacement fob to suit your car .

I'm assuming this is the key you mean?-

This is the key details and Finis codes, prices are in Euros but can't A/ confirm the UK price or B/ confirm if the prices are accurate (probably best to assume not).

Fobs of this type are like hens teeth on eBay but found this one, likely to be a copy but if it works then all good.

The blades are readily available-

Hope that's of use to you,

Thanks Stoney871, fantastic info.

Think I will buy Fob and blade from eBay, but one further question, how to program the keyless Fob.

The two options are via Ford which i calculated will work out at £240+ (key, cutting and programming) or via an auto locksmith who will do your own key (probably grudgingly but won't turn down your money) for about £80 tops.

The key needs to be coded to your car immobiliser via IDS but this takes less than a minute.

Auto locksmiths will carry this kit.

The keyless fobs are not programmable youreself dealer or mobile locksmiths the only option ive heard some mobiles cant programme them

Spoke to local key cutting man.

He has quoted me £75 for supply, cutting, programming of blade. Sounds expensive but I can see no other option.

Note he will not accept blank blade from EBay "I would not know what type of metal had been used".

I had not realised the blade contained a chip which had to be programmed.

The key blades tend to be brass with a chrome coating to stop tarnishing.

They will cut easily enough but some won't cut them as they worry about breaking cutters.

Never had a problem getting them cut myself.

£75 sounds pretty reasonsble tbh, have seen some charged £130+.
