Winter Tyres (Far Too Early I Know But Bear With Me)

Featured Replies

All being well I should be able to afford a set of continental TS850 tyres before next winter and have been looking online now while the demand is low. Many people say don't waste your money for the snow we get but they offer superior grip and superior braking in all conditions below +7C so they are safer and whilst using them, you save tyre wear on the normal set. I even had some on the 4x4 I had before the Fez.

So, rather than require persuasion or dissuasion, I am wondering if anyone on here used them on their fez and what you do for storage in the summer months. I have seen tyre bags advertised and wondered about those. Or like me, are you planning on buying?

Any thoughts?

I have a set of winter tyres that are kept on steel rims year round, just stacked up under a cover. I went with Continental's, haven't used them yet though as I got them about 8 weeks back, should be good though.

Don't think I can stretch to rims so will just have them put on the alloys if not. What I like is the fact that besides general safety advantages, when it does snow you can sit laughing as opposed to worrying about it. Only deep/thick snow would stop you (which is where a 4x4 and ground clearance comes in)

Just keep looking at online auctions for some steel wheels, I've got a couple of cheap and nasty winter tyres on steel rims (Which I've cleaned and painted up in silver) for my mondy, as I only plan to fit them to the front drive wheels anyway

Mine got some Halfords special paint on them, just in black :P

Look for ratty ones, they're always good being steel and can be repainted yourself easily. I want for steel's with spokes rather than the classic ones as they were just cheaper at the time.

I had the TS800's on mine a few years back and they were amazing, really can't rate them highly enough. Could practically do an emergency stop on sheet ice!

I was told by my rally driving boss that stacking tyres on the walls will damage them, we have his spares at work and they are upright by his decree.

My previous car was a Mondeo, had Michelin Alpins as a spare winter set and they were 7 years old and stored in the garage in a pile with no damage.

The bottom tyre was on a sheet of plywood to lift it off the floor.

My current Fiesta has a set of Alpin A4's and these are stored in the same way.

Soft compound tyres like racing will degrade stacked, but road tyres are just fine to stack.
