Steering Creak (Now A Squeal)

Featured Replies

Hi I'm new to the forum and was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on a problem!

The past 4 weeks when pulling away on a morning I've noticed a faint creaking which can feel through the steering wheel. Only at low speeds, and seemed to go away after a bit of driving. I assumed it would just be a joint/bearing in the steering column.

- I should point out I do a lot of dry steering

Yesterday the creaking got louder and now and again it makes crunching/cracking/squealing noises - and the steering feels as if it sticks here and there!

Power steering fluid is full, no leaks, you can hear and feel it working fine with no interruptions.

From inside the car it sounds like its coming from just left of where the steering column enters the floor (but outside). From underneath it sounds like its coming from inside/beyond the boot that covers the inner tie rod end.

Can anyone advise, and give me rough costs?

I've taken 2 videos. I appreciate a video of a steering wheel isn't going to help much but see if you can tell what the noise sounds like!
First 2 vids are mine, last one is the exact sound when you get underneath!

Could be a number of things like new track rods. Suspension needs tightening. Bearing needs replacing etc you list parts all day but in the end i always say for brakes and steering parts "get it checked by a pro". Will be nothing worse then saying "yeah its that x and y" you go away spend the money and it turns out its not and if it fails and causes you to crash.

there was a technical service bulletin for early 05 models that suspension creaking was due to tie rods replacements are available to stop this or nip to halfords and buy white spray grease jack the car up and spray the track rod ends with spra grease
