Potential Exhaust Issue.

Featured Replies

I have been noticing recently that my exhaust sounds a bit roary when i pull off only in 1st gear.

It does sound like its blowing slightly but other times in every other gear it seems fine.

When i pull off from a standstill it seems to make a deeper engine sound which i think is the exhaust, is there any way of checking this before i go into a garage to get it checked over.

Plus could this be a related issue that i am getting, when sometimes i put my footdown and the car bogs down and seems to have no power and other times it pulls sweet as a nut.

the engine i question is 1.6 duratec 100bhp on a 2010 manual focus.

with the engine running put youre hand firmly youre palm over the exhaust tip and block it if the backpressure pushes youre hand away the exhausts fine if it doesnt and theres a hole it will blow out the hole and not push youre hand away

if you dont want to use your hand then use a cloth/rag to cover the exhaust tip - only do this when the engine/exhaust is cold - we dont want you to burn your hand!

Thanks for the replies, gonna try this later on today when the car is cold

A blow in the exhaust will be there in any gear.

You could try lying at the side of the car and press the accelerator pedal (possible to do yourself) to see if you can hear it any better and work out if it is a blow
