02-08 Oil Sump Leak

Featured Replies

My parents have a very early 02 plate mk6 with a 1.3 efi engine. It's a nice little car but not without its problems, such as the oil leak. Its pretty much raining oil out the back of the sump and to confirm this i have degreased the entire bay top to bottom and went under it the next day and oil is leaking out between the block and sump, oil is collecting on the bolt heads and dripping. It's actually managing to find its way onto the subframe too?! It's a pretty heavy leak IMO especially with the puddles it's leaving. What I really need help with, is the process of actually doing this. I went to attack the job once before and found the bell housing actually hides and blocks access to one of the 8mm bolts holding the sump on, and if im honest, i'm not entirey sure how i can support the engine while i take the box off and drop the sump?

I know i could use some kind of lifting equipment like a support beam or engine crane, but availability to borrow one for a day isnt there and it's not something i want to buy for a single job. Anyone have any advice or have had to deal with this themselves? Would really appreciate others' imput!

Cheers

Dave
