Lazy Tappet In 2005 Focus Need Help !!!

Featured Replies

Hey I own a 2005 ford focus and it has developed a lazy tappet should I be worried and what should I do to fix this

the 2005 mk2 focus shouldnt get tappet issues that was solved are we sure thats what it is if you have a ti vct then the injectors make a similar noise if its the mk 1.5 then an engine flush and xome magnatec oil usually sorts it out

Mine is the 1.6 titanium 3door. You think that will do the trick ?

It's only noisy when you start it from cold and when you rev it high. Once up to temp you can't hear it !

The 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 Duratec (Sigma) engines do not have hydraulic valve tappets. These engines have solid valve tappets which are available in different sizes.. The correct valve lash is achieved by installing the right size of valve tappet.

the timing belt of these engines needs to be changed at an interval of 8 Years / 100.000 MLS. It is highly recommended to check the valve lash adjustment at the same time because if adjustment is needed it is nescessary to remove the camshafts.

These engines are known to run a little rough when cold. Some even say these engines sound almost like a diesel engine when cold. I have a slightly modified 1.6 Duratec (100 BHP) which also ran a little rough when cold. After checking the valve lash adjustment and inserting the correct type and viscosity of oil the engine ran a little bit better but still rough. My car had still the original PCM firmware which was developed in 2004. After installing the latest available (2011) firmware the engine runs much smoother / quiter when cold.

I'm afraid that is just speaking Spanish to me can you clear that up what shall I do to solve the problem ???

First check the type/viscosity of the engine oil that is used. The wront type/viscosity of oil can cause the engine to run rough at cold start. The correct oil is a 5W30 oil that meets or exceeds the Ford WSS-M2C913-C or ACEA A1/B1 specifications.

If the correct oil is used and you think the engine makes too much noise at a cold start you could check the valve lash adjustment. If you do not have the skills/experience to do this it is a better decision to take the car to a specialist.
