Fiesta Mk7 Starting Problems

Featured Replies

Evening, new here but hoping someone can help.

Bought my first Ford a few months ago and its a Fiesta mk7 1.4tdci. Lovely little car with the exception of starting it.

When i start it from cold, it tends to take a few turns of the engine before it starts, and it runs as if its lost a cylinder (ie rough). Aswell as this it chucks quite a bit of smoke out the exhaust (not using any oil, smells like unburnt diesel), and the rev counter doesnt move of its stop. The battery warning light also stays lit (guessing its not receiving enough umpf from the alternator due to the low idling revs). After about 10 seconds it suddenly corrects itself and drives fine. Theres also a sort of clicking (mechanical, not solenoid etc) sound at tickover, but not had chance to investigate this yet.

The cars had this problem for about a month now, but due to other commitments ive not had chance to do a great deal with it.

Any help/guidance/info etc would really be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi I'm new aswel I have a ford fiesta mk6 1.25 petrol. Old diesel and some new diesel cars have a glow plug preheat cycle which can be from 2-10secs. When you have your key in the ignition before the last turn to crank the engine you have illuminated lights one may be a glow plug light which will be illuminated until the preheat cycle has been completely then will go out and it will then be ready to crank over. I dunno if this is the issue but all I can think of maybe I may help maybe check your ford manual it may say something.

Cheers Jake

Yeah my glow plug light illuminates for approx 2 seconds before going out. Even after this i still have the problems.

Thanks for the input.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I have a 1.6 TDCi and find mine to be the same on cold mornings first start, if you just leave it to tickover for about 3 minutes it should be fine. Also, mine smokes a lot when it's cold, i believe its just a mixture of it being a diesel and cold weather / hot gases and it just evaporates but when i boot it (from relatively cold) i get black smoke.

I also happen to get a clicking noise when ive been running the car it sounds to come from the footwell / engine bay area?

Glad to know I'm not alone with the problem. The clicking noise to me sounds like its coming from the drivers side of the engine bay. Do you also have the problem with the rev counter not reading when its running rough?

No you're not alone. I'd like to find out what it is before warranty runs out incase it's anything serious.

I took mine back in twice while under warranty for this problem, only to be told 'we cant replicate the fault'.
