Help/advice On Scratch Repair.

Featured Replies

Just looking some advice on how to touch up s scratch along p/s of my focus. Its about 1ft long i t happened in car park, a trolley I think.

Its not too deep but tcut removed most of it but a small fraction I can feel it with my finger nail so I think a sand, prime, paint and a clear coat.

I'm looking at halfords as they are close to me and want to take the job on myself due tob expenses.

My idea is

1) clean area with water to remove dirt.

2) lightly sand scratch out.

3) prime area with high build primer.wait to dry.

4) lightly rub primer down flush with surrounding paintwork.

5) spray on paint color (moondust silver).wait to dry.

6) spray over with clear coat lawyer.wait to dry/harden.

7) polish and wax.

Is this a correct way to go about it. Also can anyone recommend any halfords primers paints or laquers and anything else I might need as in grades of sand paper etc. Thanks.

How deep is the scratch, is it just surface, or when you run a fingernail over it, can you feel the scratch with your nail?

Half of it is surface in which the tcut did va descent job of but the other half I can feel it slightly with my nail. Its not right to the metal though but I think it has broken the clear coat and down as far as a bit of the actual paint.

Its about a foot long but around 1 to 2 mm wide if you know whats I mean. I keep trying tcut but I think its not going ton do much more to it so I'm thinking just buff it down to spray over as I don't think the touch up pens wud do a good job of it.

What method should I take just what I said in my first post? And if so is halfords touch up paints good for the job?

Halfords paints junk and wont match the paint unless youre very good at spraying and blending just clear coat the remaining scratch no offence but it doesnt take much to make an !Removed! of it and in this weather its too cold to paint it will just bloom

I had a fairly light scratch on my bonnet one of those that if you know it there it bugs you but wasn't actually that visible!

My dad went over it with the magic pen thing and omg it work wonders ! I will get hold of him and let you know what it was called :-)

Just had a browse and I am pretty certain it was this .. I remember it having the word magic in it too post-42643-13842318442_thumb.jpg

I have also before done what you said "lightly sand it" using very fine sand paper and give it a good old polish.. However I will not be responsible if this doesn't work for you. LOL but it did for me

Well I've had very good results with Halfords paint (in nice weather). The colour match was pretty much perfect, although it was whole panels I did so I guess the difference would be less obvious than in this case. :)

I will try halfords own paint as its just s small scratch. Also just for future ref Is any of the other magic pen things good? Any other brand other than tcut good for removing light scratches?

You can get Ford direct paint off Ebay for about £15 including a can of laquer , at least you know it's going to be a better match.

The cans come with a a small brush for the scratches.

why dont you contact a smart repair guy or a decent valeter that deals with paint correction

thanks guys i got Halfords stuff this morning and now have it all repaired. did it in the garage with the heater to speed things up. all is good and I'm happy with the finish.

thanks.

do you have any before and after pictures?

  • Author

just after as i never thought to take one before i started. i'm sure there will be more touch ups in the future so i will take a before and after shot. also i would not recommend halfords touch up paint for large panel repairs but for small areas where its not too visual its not bad and it saves the pocket too. :)

that is true!

glad you got it sorted though!
