my partner has a 55 plate 1.25 fiesta, and the only issues to date (2 years of driving) are:

coil pack split due to bad winter weather causing misfire

holes throughout exhaust mainly at the back box section leading to blowing exhaust

apart from that its passed all mots

Fords Sigma engines (the 1.25) are rock solid, really. so. The mk 6.5 is a great car also. They drive, handle and ride well. Only issues are clutch release bearings get noisy (No impact, but annoying) and also reverse gear gets a little annoying to put in. Try and get a mk 6.5 as they have way better features. They are from 55 plates onwards, and have different headlight and rear lights. Also, they're much nicer inside. The special edition Zetec Freedom is brilliant also, a friend has one. They have aux in on the stereo, bluetooth, remote locking and tend to come with a head front screen also which as winter is coming up is a great feature on Icy mornings.
