Track Rod Ends

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I'm, new to the club and I wish I had found it ages ago, although those problems have been solved. Pehaps I may be able to help others who have similar issues to those that I have fixed.

But now I need your help.

I am attempting to change a track rod end on my mk3 mondy. I have the new one, but I cannot undo the locknut. I have tried banging the spanner after soaking in wd40, no movement. So I undid the joint end at the hub end thinking I could turn it off but of course the track rod turns too doesn't it!! It's hanging down now so that the WD40 can run inside, hopefully that will help.

Does anybody have any other suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

temporarily refit the track rod to hub..get a blowtorch and heat the track rod end close to the locknut, get it nice and hot.

chances are its rusted up, so will pay to unscrew the track rod end all the way whilst still hot,....not forgetting to make sure the lock nut is nice and free both ways too, to ease tracking adjustment later on

before you start, count the exposed threads behind the locknut to give a base setting for new t/r/end

if this works, allow the track rod to fully cool before cleaning, smear of grease and then fitting new joint.
