Stoney871
Check the resistor pack and make sure the pollen filter is clean/dry.
JW1982
As far as I remember on setting 4 of the switch the resistor is bypassed. So it will most likely not be the resistor. I have seen a couple of times that the contact surfaces of the switch get burned after a while which causes the switch to not function (correctly) anymore. This can be solved bycleanin the contact surfaces of the switch.
Focus-Jonny
Hi setting 4 stopped on my ford focus mk1, it turned out to be a melted contact on the control switch! Worth a check
Focus-Jonny
I was also advised to start the car with all switches at 0 position as this stops the initial surge of current as the car starts from running through the switch contacts damaging them over time

Stoney871
If you mean the trim around the radio you just take out the radio and theres a couple of screws to undo and then it all unclips. A few wiring plugs (switches, clock, lighter socket) to remove.
