Acceleration Power Is Slow After Pump Change

Featured Replies

Hi guys, Ive just had the high pressure pump changed on my focus1.6 tdci and I've noticed that the acceleration is not the same as before especially during take-off and acceleration in general has dropped, but the pump is exactly the same as the original, part number, manufacturer and evrything.

please help.

It's possible the pump timing is out where did you get it fitted also not100% sure if it has to be programmed to the ecu as well do you now if this was done and was your fuel filter changed at the same time.

Thankx for your reply Neil, i got it fitted at a STL service centre in leicester, as for the programming part, is it something to do with the coding?, coz if it is then I asked Ford whether it was coded or not n they said its not coded..so it may be the timing as you say....if thats the case then is it a quick fix or does it need to be taken off again?

I not 100% sure if ford say it's not coded that's ok as for the timing not sure on the 1.6 I know the 2.0 is just off the cam if yours is set up like my 1.8 it will need special tools to set up properly it might just be fractionally out I would take it back to and explain the symptons get them to drive it could just need a simple adjustment the pump is run off the timing belt so could be possible one or other is slightly out I think I have read on here recently that independents struggle with the 1.6 timing but I stand to be corrected .

yes this one is also a cam driven pump and i hope its something they'll be able to sort out, will be going back to them tomorrow, but does it affect the fuel consumption though in any way.

Don't think u need time that pump it just A bolt on job have u still have u still got old pump there is a mark on timing belt pulley for pump but I recall takin pump off before an where u put tools for timing belt pin for pump pulley it doesnt actually slot into pump I could be wrong now but if u have old pump can check if I right

I still have the old pump with me but the pulley is not attached to it and like you say that its a bolt on job, thats what the garage said as well they said theres no timing of the pump, it may be a case of the pump being older or weaker than the original.

However is there anything I can do to increase the power.

Right I don't know why where replacing pump in first place but explain wat ur problem is an why did u replace pump

  • Author

Yea the reason why I had to replace the pump was because the original one had a leak on the seal, so got me a second hand one from someone breaking up their focus, same manufacturer(Bosch), part number and evrything, got it bolted on and as soon as I started driving it I noticed that the acceleration had dropped significantly compared to before the pump was changed, this time I had to rev it more and the revs hardly go above 2k when changing between gears unless I press my foot down hard certainly acceleration is weaker and slow to pick-up speed feels like a 1.1 litre petrol that i normally drive sometimes.

Where was the leak have u had any decent diagnostics done sounds like u could have another issue did u have similar drivability issues with other pump
