Wierd Sound ??

Featured Replies

Morning all..

I went for a drive yesterday for my son to see Santa (not real btw)

Anyhows on the way back there were some temporary lights on a hill, which I was going downhill. So I was squeezing and releasing the brakes to move slowly down the hill. What I noticed was that second just before I squeeze and release the brakes there is a terrible creaking sound, kind of like metal rubbing together ??..does this mean I need my brakes done?

As always any help is appreciated !!

Possibly - you should get them checked - see how much meat is on the pads/ condition of discs etc, there are other things that can make noise, see if you can tell where it is coming from (front/ back, right/left)

it sounds like its coming from the front. When I press the brakes fully its ok .its when im in traffic and im on and off them a lot for very short bursts. The sound occurs more I reckon when im releasing the pedal, but its only as soon as I release the pedal I get the sound once the pedal starts coming up the sound is gone

Could be the pads worn out, or the discs may also have a "high spot" that is rubbing there is another thing that may be the cause - a sticky caliper - or, less likely, a faulty wheel bearing - you could take the wheels off to check how much "meat" is left on the pads, if they are thin, probably need new pads, on a "modern" car, you often need to get the discs, as well as the pads changed,

if there is plenty of "meat" left on the pads and the discs are in good condition, seek expert advice, as the brakes can be "ok" but just squeaking, or it may be something more serious, like a wheel bearing on its way out, or a sticking caliper (can cause uneven wear)

Clearly this is Santa getting his own back on you for not believing ;)

It could be that the pad's are vibrating against the caliper. If your handy with a spanner you could check the pads and disks over and just apply copper grease to the back of the pads.
