Which Mondeo Would You Recommend Instead Of Vw Passat Tdi For Town?

Featured Replies

Good morning,

I am new to this site and to Ford cars. I would like to ask you for advice which Mondeo (which engine) would you recommend for me to buy instead of current VW Passat TDI for mailny short town runs.

Some time ago I have made the worst decision I could - I have bought 4 yrs old VW Passat TDI 2.0 Turbo car equipped with DPF filter which - as I only found later on - is not destined to operate on short town runs I mainly do.

So I have decided to give it back and considering to buy one of 2002 - 2004 Mondeo - petrol of course. What would you recommend?

Thank you very much for help.

Have a good weekend.

Peter

That's actually now your second worst decision. Your worst decision is buying a Ford. Terrible reliability, terrible for corrosion, terrible customer service.

If you must get a Mondeo, forget about anything built between 2000-now. You will regret it. If anything, get something built between 1996-2000, and even then be wary of severe rust.

I'm not sure whether to take this comment seriously or not so I'll take as not because it's surely a joke.

Hi Peter.

I'd go for the '04 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X , I use to own one, You'll get better spec on the '04 Model than 2002 model, it was the face lifted version of the mk3 so it got Leather heated / aircon seats ,Sony 6-disc in dash ice, half wood-leather steering wheel, chrome grill & strips around the windows different light clusters, I use to get between 27-30mpg around town and had 4 years with only minor wear & tear issues.

Take it seriously. Modern Fords are complete and utter crap. In my opinion which obviously, may differ from your own having a 1990 Ford Escort, which will far outlive any of the junk Ford are manufacturing today.

This isn't the only Ford I've had the pleasure to own. I have had many cars but I keep coming back to Ford.

I can think of many cars worse to own than a Mondeo... I have been very happy with my Mondeo for the 3 years I have owned it. (its not a town car though unless you want to drink diesel)

Get a skoda octavia or superb instead

My m8 Jeremy suggests a Vectra :p

Ive had my Mk3 Mondeo 8 years, and a mk2 and mk1 before that, the Mk3 has weaknesses, including the DMF, but most modern diesels are the same (can be fixed with a clutch/ DMF upgrade)

The mk3 Mondeo 2000-2007 does not use a DPF - so that is a big plus compared to later models - the TDDI has mechanical injectors, which are tougher than the "soft" TDCI injectors, which were never designed for low-sulphor diesel - so tend to wear out eventually, and are expensive to replace

\So the TDDI is the best - if you can find a good one, they can last for 300k+ miles

All cars have faults/ problems, some are more expensive to repair than others

Im now into 5 years of running a 3.0 ghia x,totally reliable, never let me down,no problems and about 22mpg in town 36-39mpg on long motorway haul,my previous 2.0 petrol ghia estate only gave me 25mpg/40mpg,not much difference in the mpg,but well worth it performance wise:D

V6 lover your getting 22mpg from a 3.0 mk3 that's brilliant am only getting between 23-27mpg around town from my mk4 2.0 Titanium X, I wish I'd bought the 2.5T but a mate said the tax is extortionate and £260 ayear seems harsh at the state of roads and motorways around Manchester.
