Heater / Aircon Issues

Featured Replies

Have a 2006 Mk3 Mondeo and am having some issues with heater settings and the aircon.

If we want the car 'hot' then everything is fine but we can't seem to get cold air out of the vents. If we put the heater selector on its lowest setting it won't go anything under luke warm  . The aircon stopped working and we were assured by a mechanic friend it was just in need of regassing. Took it into Kwik Fit today to get it regassed but they say thats not the issue, they dont know what the issue IS but it isnt lack of gas. When we press the AC button the aircon pump starts rotating to start with but stops and starts. Any ideas?

i expect its the clutch accuator on the air con pump or relay im hoping this is some sort of help

My money is on your radiator fan being dead. Without that going, the aircon won't run continuously.

Very easy to check - put the bonnet up, remove the engine cover. Start the car and switch the aircon on and the heat setting to its lowest. The fan should now be on.

A lot of people will tell you that it's not the fan, but the fan control module which is at fault. Suffice to say I'm currently on I think my 4th radiator fan in two years with this exact problem. All the fans came from scrapyards so weren't new, the first one I bought lasted over a year, the second less than three months. Rather than buy a Ford replacement fan I opted for a universal 14-inch one which I've mounted into the existing fan chassis with zip ties, then just soldered the old fan plug onto the bare wires of the new fan.

As a note of caution here, the Haynes manual tells you to remove the old fan out the bottom of the car. I've tried - it just won't, so don't waste your time. The fan is at least an inch deeper than the gap it needs to fit through, and is blocked by a steel cross-member. The only way to get it out, is from above, so you have to be super careful not to damage all the pipework it's going to have to get past (most notably on the driver's side of the car). Luckily the new universal fan I put in is a lot slimmer than the Ford one, so if I ever need to replace it in future, I should be able to get it out without too much hassle.
