Top Brake Light Fault Sometimes Theres Volts

Featured Replies

My centre brake light has stopped working, I've changed the bulb checked the wiring at the hinge of the tailgate. There are no volts going to the bulb, but when I pull the bulb the volts come back. What should I do any one.

Try removing the brake light, I'm sure it on a sort of multiplug

Most likely a loose connection inside the light unit itself if you get power when you move the bulb

Thanks for the reply, the bulb connection is clean and sound. Its very odd as there is good voltage when there is no bulb as soon as you connect a good bulb the voltage drops to 0.

How are you measuring the voltage?

In a circuit If you measure the voltage between the live and the ground(earthing point on the car for example), you'll get 12v but if you measure the negative side of the bulb connection (with a bulb fitted) you'll get 0v as the voltage is used up by the bulb

It could also be a problem on the negative side of the circuit, trying to think off the top of my head, but when you put a bulb in, if it's shorting to the positive somehow, then this could also prevent it from working

Try disconnecting the light unit from the power plug and using a couple of bits of wire, connect a bulb up to that, if it works then you have a problem with the light unit which is what I reckon it will be

Thanks for that will do that next, even disconnected the battery to see if a reset would have done it. That fact that it's open circuit until I put the bulb in, hope it is a neg short because I could make a new one with a self tapper

I am using a voltmeter and I get 10.99 volts not 12 -13v when i measure across the battery. When the bulb is in it does not come on but the bulb works it doesnt even glow a little. Ive earthed it with the rear cigarette socket and still get 10.99v.

Ok got a wire from the live terminal connected that to the bulb then earthed it on the cigarette socket and the bulb came on for about 1/2 second then didn't come on again until I turned off and on the ignition. So it looks like a short in the live but how on earth do I find that. Does anyone know where I could get the wiring diagram

Haynes manuals will offer a wiring diagram, or if you get a recent edition of Ford TIS
