Mk3 Air Intake

Featured Replies

Ive just noticed that on the air intake behind the grill there's like an air plate in front of the actual pipe - I assume this stops water going in and leaves etc..

But if this was removed and a 90 degree pipe put on (tie wrapped to the grill) would this make any difference?

you will probably end up having to replace the filter more regularly.

The water doesn't seem to be too much of a problem as such, from what I under stand the is a small hole at the lowest point in the air intake system to let water out, but bugs muck leaves etc will get in alot easier and foul up the filter.

ok may leave it alone then lol but would it make any difference?

Nope - an NA F1 car with a massive air ram scoop only produces 3% supercharge with the air pressure, and thats with no air filter and flat out (eg 180+) - it will make no noticable difference on your car untill your car gets slower with the flies/ debris you have collected

The people that designed the air intake know what they are doing and it was designed like that for a reason, (to stop flies/ debris getting into the engine air intake) even the position it is in - it draws cool air,

The ST-TDCI has exactly the same intake/ design and produces 152Hp stock and about 180 tuned - the intake is 50mm but other parts of the inlet are only 35mm in diameter anyway

Unless you are a engineer/ tuner and know what you are doing probably best to leave well alone

A remap (including Bluefin) or quality tuning box, produces the most power for a single mod, and is the most bang for buck, then removing the exhaust back-box, then a decat, then everything els makes hardly any difference, but some mods are inexpensive, like EGR plate, (an "essential" mod for a mk3 diesel) or resonator bypass, so are worth doing

You can de-web your airbox, (smooth the inside of it) and fit a K&N panel filter, only worth a couple of HP (with the resonator bypass) but the engine pulls a bit better before the boost kicks in and these are realatively cheap mods
