Wish we could have that for the Diesel cars! Can we?

We could but it wouldnt benefit the diesel turbo atall mate would just make the noise,

And yes the noise is somthing i would love to hear when i clutch but i would lose 99% street credit because its pointless on a turbo diesel engine especially when the turbo is variable vain like ours,

The purpose of the dump valve waste gate on a petrol turbo is:

To release the spool of boost held within the turbo at the time of the driver pressing the cluth.

If there is no dump valve present, then the boost pressure builds in the turbo causing cavitations inside the casing of the turbo eventually causing it to crack and split, the dump valves purpose is to release the pressure preventing cavitations and reducing heat soak.

BOV's were highly popular in the early to mid 90's because ceramic turbo's were in full supply and didn't like too much heat soak,

Later replaced with cast iron ball bearing Turbo's.

The pigeon sound is heard when the sump valve has been set to fully recirculate,

This method is much like an EGR recirculating/dumping the pressure back in to the induction chamber instead of venting to atmosphere.

The dump valve saw in the gramps build is fully adjustable from the drivers seat,

Can be set to semi Recirculation which reduces lag by only venting the percentage of boost that is likely to cause damage.

Diesel turbos dont function like petrol ones,

Spool time is slower and diesels auck in less air

Especially the modern day variable vain turbo since it changes fan size inside the turbo its been designed to create a set level of boost for each rev level.

So there is very little chance of remaining boost to vent to atmosphere,

For these reasons i dont have a BOV on my diesel engine lol

For those with no turbo or a diesel theres always the saber electronic BOV from ebay.

Thanks for the comprehensive explanation. I learnt something new today. Cheers mate :)

Watched it the other night. I just had to go look if we could get E85 in Ireland. Also, the only stock car that I knew ran on Flexfuel was the Volvo S40. It was a lot of fun to watch and can't wait for the next one.

Gramps!!!

  • Author

Supergramps looks awesome! They seriously need to get rid of the tow bar at the back though. Otherwise, I like the look of this car a lot more than Ver 1.0

371 bhp at the wheels from that engine as a daily driver is pretty impressive I think. I hope they bring it to the drag strip in the next episode to see how it does the 1/4 mile :)

I was really looking forward to seeing that paint job on old Gramps, hope they apply it to Supergramps soon.

What paint job were they thinking of doing to old Gramps?
