S-Max Central Locking Trouble

Our S-Max (2009 model) has a problem with the passenger door central door locking. The door will always lock with the remote, but will not open and has to be manually opened from the inside.

When operating the lock, the internal locking button 'twitches' so it seems to be connected and clearly the door always locks, so I am a bit perplexed as to why it locks, but won't unlock.. Any ideas anyone?

    my 1st port of call would be the wires in the door gaitor.like on a lot of cars these tend to fray and break.
