Question Regarding A Whine Noise On A Focus

Featured Replies

Hi there. I've just been and test drove a 2006 (56 plate) Focus 1.8 Sport and everything on it seems faultless apart from a whine noise when cruising at higher speeds. Most noticeable in 5th gear. I love the car, it looks spotless inside and out even though it does have 105,000 miles on the clock I'm not to fussed as it has a full service history and only 2 owners.

The dealer has agreed to change the belt as it's due anyway and I'm hoping that is the cause of the whine. I'm basically after any opinions on what may be the potential cause as I'd like to buy this car as soon as possible but not if this noise is a sign of an expensive repair.

Thanks :)

May be more drivetrain related if you hear it at higher speeds rather than just at higher revs. Could try getting it up to speed then letting throttle off and putting clutch in - if the noise is still there then perhaps a wheel bearing or similar?

What I did notice is that I think the wine stopped when I came off the throttle and got higher pitch as the revs picked up in 5th. The dealer is going to get the belt changed (if it has a belt) and then I'll test drive it again and try some of this stuff out.

Garage called me back and said it is the layshaft bearing. They have promised to get it sorted but seemed eagerly keen on getting me to put down a deposit before the work was done. This just makes me think they want rid of it as quick as they can. Going to have another look tonight but think I'll pass on this one as it seems a little dodgy.
