Help/advice Needed With My Old Mondeo.

Featured Replies

Hello. I have a 2001 (51) plate Mondeo Ghia 2.0L Duratec Petrol. It has covered 198k miles and has been well looked after. I drove it home from work the other day and it was fine. When I went to go back to work today I cranked the engine over and it sounded like the cambelt had snapped. Its seemed to crank without the normal cranking noise and it failed to start. I know it hasnt got a cambelt, but thats the kind of sound it made. I have removed the camshaft cover to check the Timing Chain and all is good. Its still timed perfectly and the chain is taught. Cranking it over with the rocker cover off shows the cams are turning and nothing is broken, What can be wrong???

Did some of the mondeo engines not have some kind of swirl flaps in the manifold that end up getting ingested?

Thought these were fitted to Diesel Engines? Mine is petrol.

Starter motor related? Kudos on getting 198k by the way...

No, the Starter is fine, turns the engine over as always, The best way to explain it is, imagine you remove the cambelt from an engine then turn the key, it seems to sound like it has no compression. although it drove me home the other day fine.

No I'm sure they were fitted to both 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol engines

Update: So I removed the inlet manifold, and the butterflies, replaced the assembly shaft, cleaned everything with petrol and compressed air, (a bit dangerous if you smoke) and re installed it. Replaced the Cam and Crank sensors, Coil pack, Plugs leads and Fuel filter to boot. Changed every fuse with a like for like but brand new.Checked the compression on all four cylinders, (all good) and whilst at it changed the oil and filter and not forgetting a New Battery. All supplied cheaply by my local motor factor.. Finished putting it back together at 4.10 pm today in the rain and cold. Sat in it and cranked it over and Hey Presto! She didnt start. Just made a Popping sound from deep inside the engine. So went indoors, had a cup of tea and got the number for a local scrapyard. Was talking to them about it and they offered me a cool £110.00 for her. So went out to clear it out of my cds and stuff, and sit behind the wheel one last time Then I remembered one of my fav CDs was in the stereo, so unthinking I put the key in the ignition and turned it on. Feck me if it didnt start straight up and run perfectly...... My best guess is that maybe it was a blocked fuel filter and the extra cranking was needed to draw up the fuel? Who knows? I`ve done 198k miles in her, so she`s paid for herself a few times over. I intend to get 300k out of her too. (my previous car was a 1986 Volve 240GL which finally died with 422k miles)

I`ll keep you updated. Cheers for your help with this.
