Cannot Engage 5th Gear

I own a Ford Fiesta (Mk6) 1.4 TDCI Diesel on a 53 (2003) numberplate.

When driving in the last 2 months I have noticed the difficultly of selecting 5th gear (from 4th). Eventually 5th gear would engage - as time wore on, I found it more difficult to select 5th gear (but I eventually get it into 5th).

Suddenly last week, when I selected the 5th gear on the M25, (note: the gearstick stays in 5th once selected). and released the clutch slowly, the rev counter increases rapidly (until I deselect to 4th gear & then all is fine).

Are we likely to be looking at a full gearbox issue or is there something small that could be wrong with the 5th gear itself?

    sounds like it selected thire instead of fifth, it could be a linkage problem from the gearlever to the box.
