1600 Or 1800 Diesel

Featured Replies

And for comparison, this is a few years worth of a mk1.5 1.8...

Shame I don't have a 1.6 for full comparison! Although the 2.0 clearly holds its own, I'd have no problem at all buying a 1.8 if they'd stick a 6 speed box in it!

Firstly thanks for all the replies I received on my question.

Just a wee up date on what I ended up buying.

Went for the 1.8 diesel. picked it up last night. 57 plate 1.8 diesel estate.

Got an issue with it almost straight away certainly but I have fingers crossed it wont be too serious. hoping its just the hose going into the turbo that's causing it as its split.

But thanks for the replies as it really was appreciated. great to see the forum has so much support for each other.

Cheers

Pleased to hear you went for the 1.8TDCi Estate aswell. Do upload some pics if you have time! :)

I never took the dpf out.. It just doesn't have one... I'm not entirely sure why that is, but I'm not going to question it

90bhp 1.6s don't have a DPF, 110bhp ones do. :)

I know the OP has already chosen an engine, but imo the 1.6 isn't that bad - look how many are on the road used in Fords as well as PSA cars, Volvo, Mazda etc. Yes they're a bit more delicate than the archaic 1.8 lol, but they're also considerably cheaper to run and more refined. :) That said, if I was making my choice again, I'd go for the 2.0 TDCi - 6 gears and rear discs for a start lol! Yes it'd cost a bit more to run but I think the pro's outweigh the cons. I won't be getting rid of the 1.6 for a while though. :D

Well Tom, that's certainly nice to get a definitive answer on the subject! I agree if I were to re-choose the car, it'd be a 2.0 tdci...

Although the bonus of having an estate is that the rear brakes are discs in my 1.6tdci :) ;)

I did start looking at the 2.o litre after I read a few comments. but there wasn't many in my area within my price range.

Car is basically for work. Tried to keep the price as low as I could. Got the ST to play with :D

Really wish mine had rear discs, last car I had on drums was a non turbo diesel 106 lol! Could also do with bigger discs up front imo, I guess the estate bigger fronts to go with the rears though?

Ah I didn't realise you were keeping the ST as well! Lucky haha. Can I ask how you insure both though? I've got a 'fun' car to go with my comfy and eco but boring daily Focus lol, having trouble insuring it asa second car though. :(

U can fit rear disc brakes. Easy

Easy maybe, but probably not cheaply lol? Tbf I haven't really looked into it, would be a summer job as my driveway is like a mud pit atm!

Sorry Tom cant seem to reply on quotes.

I have both insured through different insurance companys. ST is with e car and the Focus estate is through Asda.

Don't get me wrong I was trying to change the insurance from the Octavia to the Focus estate and it was a major pain trying to get onto the website to do it. Kept telling me wrong details entered for logging in. but they weren't.. Had to go through enter new password and go through it all that way. but once that's done it seems simple enough. but don't think I will use them(Asda) again. You cant speak to anyone. its all press this number if you want to do this etc. I prefer the old fashioned way of speaking to someone.

There is an insurance company a lot of the members on the Focus ST owners club use. company called greenlight insurance.

I think a lot of the members use them from the ST section, They insure modified cars etc as well. might be worth trying them.

A lot of insurance companys do mirrored insurance now too if your the only driver of the cars. Lets you use your no claims discount on both cars.

But I have got something like 10 years ncd on the ST and its less than £400 a year and 2 years ncd on the Estate which is around £300.

I think half the time its just down to luck when your going to insure your car also. time of year etc.
