I added the Eco mode to mine (petals) which gives you your driving style as mentioned above but to be honest I hardly look at it these days.

I also got the green shift light to work but depending on your PCM firmware and HEC firmware you may need to upgrade both. I have heard of people that have bricked their cars doing the PCM firmware upgrades so it is not something to be done lightly if you're unsure. I did not need to update mine so I just turned it on and to be honest after a day I turned it off again as it annoyed me, all it does is indicate when to change gear and that's it.

If it was me I wouldn't bother

  • Check my signature fella, theres a link there on a guide I wrote that will help to get you started :) Basically it allows you to read pretty much every sensor it can access (so far I havent found any

  • its easy enough to use it and more importantly its actively updated, id consider paying for it its so good and lets just say I don't usually pay for software! there is quite a few folk on here that

  • Cabled is best IMHO, unless you have a windows tablet that supports all of these protocols... Hope it comes in use fella and if you need anything I will try do what I can go help.

I used to have it on my ceed, it was a nifty feature, it was a discreet arrow in the corner though not a big light mid cluster lol

Thanks fellas.

Just to point the images above are from the elmconfig running in offline just to show the options I did not get a change to screen shot when I was connected to the car. Thought I might just add that in lol!

Also i want thank all in advance who is providing help and advice here I do appreciate your time and effect.

Basically you need to upgrade the firmware. I highly recommend that you do not make any changes without saving every page twice before you muck around, so you always have two backups to get it working...

As for those settings, this will likely need an update to the instrument cluster so don't Dive into it.

James when you say back up all twice do you mean all the pages in the module even ones I don't change stuff on? for example if im changing seatbelt chime on page 2 do I backup just page 2 or page 1 and 3 as well? I take it I just save the "save to file" option twice and keep them named in two seperate locations or just name them something like "bckup1" & "bckup2".

you can update the cluster without too much bother, the eco shift mode wont work, you don't have the hardware but the eco mode will work but only after the cluster update, there has been reports of folk having some odd cluster issues with the eco shift setting selected on cars that don't support it.

eco mode does nothing more then show you how economical your driving style is, its kinda cool, an gives you some basic suggestions to improve things, like, try slowing down ;)

Darren thanks mate for the reply just out of curiosity how do you know if I dont have the hardware for the "shift up" support? can you tell engine model or does each firmware support different functions?

also when you upgraded your firmware did it mess anything up on the car or was it a simple upgrade? what other benefits are there by upgrading the firmware? also if you do a firmware upgrade can you always go back to the previous version if the new version is not working right?

The shift up indicator is a cool little feature but I'm not overall bothered if I don't get it to work I just liked the idea of adding some extra features. is there anyway in finding out what can or cant be changed on my model of focus using elm config without going through all the options to see if it works or not?

also on the subject of forscan I think it is very a good piece i software I will need to play about with it a bit more to get the use from it but is the anything on it that could mess the car up or is it straight forward enough to try out the options it has?.

The shift up basically illuminates the icon at a pre-set RPM, its nothing more advanced than that an since your looking at almost the exact spot the RPM is displayed in anyway its kinda redundant, if you rev the balls off the car the icon will light up anyway,

Its the PCM that is the tripping stone, messing about with this via OBD is a no no in my opinion, it can be done but I can think of a dozen things that can go wrong and youll be utterly screwed, if you want to mess about with the PCM your best using something like BDM with direct physical access to the ECU, that means removing the ECU and setting up a wee jigg to connect to the correct pins directly, this will allow direct un restricted access to the ECU and more importantly, will allow you to reflash it if you screw it up an your car wont start, if your screw it up with OBD you will likely lose access to it (think of it like a computer that wont turn on)

Ive done similar things before with phones and its pretty straight forward but you need the right gear and a level head to do it, personally unless you intending on running your own MAPs on your car I wouldn't suggest touching the PCM.

The instrument cluster (HEC) is a little less drastic and is much quicker to do, you can install any version of HEC you want, when you connect up ELMConfig and go to HEC, procedures, you can click the button to populate the list of available version, some of these are no use though, I cant remember which ones are on there now but for my car the AK version was the appropriate update.

Which HEC hardware and software version do you have? (you can find out via ELMconfig on the HEC page)

as for any other improvments to the HEC, other than the ECO mode, ive not seen any, doesn't mean there isn't, but ive not noticed anything visible, often updated fix things behind the scenes, wee bugs an such like

Im trying to remember what ive used ELM config for, i turned on the auto door locking, the ECO mode an i think that was all, its more about what CAN be done with it should you need it, various mods need changes to it, there are some things that can help fix some issues with sensors.

I've changed the following settings on mine...

Enabled Deflation Detection System, Eco Mode, Upgraded ROM file to 509, Enabled all menu options in cluster whilst driving, Auto Lock doors at 5mph, Auto Heated screens switch on at 5 degrees, Deadlock car on one press of remote

Darren if I get a chance later I will connect up the laptop and see what hardware/software version I have And let you know.

Is the Rom file just the hec firmware?

My HEC Version is:

Hardware Part Number : 8v4t-14cc226-AC

Strategy Software Part Number: 8V4T-14C026-AG

Calibration Software Part Number; 8V4T-14C088-AG

Software Version: 03.10.2008

Initial Rom Level: 303

is it save to update this to activate the ECO mode and if so how do I go about it?

also if the PCM is that bit more sophisticated would it be best to just not change anything in the PCM part on elmconfig?

Thanks :)

what are you wanting to change in pcm?

if you go to hec procedures, page 2, you will see a button to "fill list", with the elm connected up, click that button, which rom versions come up?

Thanks for fast reply Darren.

Im not looking to change anything in the PCM really I just wanted to maybe get the "shift up" indicator working and thought that the only way to do this was with a PCM firmware update but like you say if I don't have the hardware then a PCM update would prove maybe pointless and also if its easy to mess the car up by altering settings in the PCM section via the obd port then It might be best to leave that part along. :(

But as for the HEC if that's safe enough to experiment with then I'm all for it lol! Im looking to get the "ECO MODE" activated and working if you think it can be done. I think from what I read in your other post that you got your working by updating something in the HEC section, so hopefully if I can get that going then I think that's all I want to add to the cluster using ELMCONGIF. At a later may experiment with the lighting delays and seat belt chimes ect but as Its new to me I don't want to dive into too much at once incase I make a mess of it lol! :mellow:

I will get what roms version are available on the "hec procedures, page 2" later when i get home from work and let you know.

Thanks again.

your right to be cautious, take it a step at a time, that way youll know whats what, I honestly wouldn't bother with the pcm updates tho, isn't worth it. keep us posted!

With the right HEC firmware the ECO mode is just a single tick box in the HEC module from memory

Ok Darren here is my avaiable list of "HEC - FIRMWARE". I included a few screen shots to show the complete list (hope this is of some help)

HEC FIRMLIST PT1

HEC FIRMLIST PT2

My avaiable List as follows:
ROM 230 (AD)
ROM 303 (AG)
ROM 403 (AH)
ROM 508 (AJ)
ROM 509 (YA)
ROM 509 (YA) TEMP by quickie (ffclub.ru)
ROM 509 (YA) FULL by quickie (ffclub.ru)
ROM 512 (AK)
ROM 512 (AK) TEMP by quickie (ffclub.ru)
ROM 512 (AK FULL by quickie (ffclub.ru)
Just a few questions.
1) How do I know what firmware update will work with my car from the list?
2) Can I alsways go back to my original version?
3) when updating do I have to be connect to interenet or is the updates included in the elmconfig itself?( Laptop looses interent signal out side lol!)
4) Do I leave car ideling when using elmfig and waht setting do I use in the "BLOCK SIZE" BOX?
Thanks

OK, you don't want anything with (YA)

the temp and the Full ones are modified ones, something to do with the tempguage and the snow flake, I believe they disable the snow flake (which kinda makes sense in Russia!) I think there might be a difference in the way fuel is calculated as well, but anyhow, if forget those an just go for

ROM 512 (AK)

you can change back to any version on that list but I don't think you will need to.

id strongly recommend making sure your laptop is connected to AC power and screen savers and power management all turned off, last thing you want is the laptop turning off half way through the flash.

Go to power management in the control panel and make sure hibernation and suspend are set to never.

id personally make sure the laptop and everything is all sitting somewhere safe, you don't want to be moving it off your lap and the USB cable falls out!

Sounds daft but you wouldn't be the first person to have run in to that!

Put car in to ACC on but not ignition on, the program will tell you step by step what to do and what not to do!

and you don't need the internet! ;)

oh and don't panic when you start seeing lots of cluster lights flash on an off!

  • Author

Thanks Darren.

Just to clarify what do you mean put car into ACC with ignition off? ( I dont have adoptive cruise control lol!)

Also what's is the (YA) firmware just out of curiosity. Is it just older firmware.

I'm going to give this a go later tonight if I get a chance.

Thanks again mate.

Acc is accessory key position I.e position 1 providing power to Windows etc.

Thanks for that simon.

I have been reading in the other thread about her updates and level 1\2\3 corresponding to each focus screen size. I have a level 2 ( if I'm reading that thread correctly !) Which is the 2009 petrol zetec small screen not the larger screen (level 3) found on some models with sat nav ect.

My question is will the ROM 512AK be OK on the level 2 screen or is it just an update for the focus models with level 3 screens?

I've read the YA is specific to another region, Russia or something, I've also read folk that have tried to use a YA image on a AX car had issues. The 512 is the last ROM that supports the smaller screen, the 509 and 512 support both small and large screen

I will hopefully try this later tonight and see how it goes. If you think

of anything else I may need to do let me know so hopefully all goes well lol! I will keep you posted.

ok Fellas did the update and all went 100% I got "ECO MODE" which is cool and enable speed limit beep (75mph apx) which is also a neat wee feature.

one thing though after update I ran FORSCAN DTC and 2 codes popped up:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

===PCM DTC U0140-61===
Code: U0140 - Lost Communication With BCM
Additional Fault Symptom:
- Signal is Above Maximum Threshold
Status:
- DTC Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC
Module: Powertrain Control Module
===END PCM DTC U0140-61===
===PCM DTC P1260-21===
Code: P1260 - THEFT Detected, Vehicle Immobilized.
Additional Fault Symptom:
- Signal is Above Maximum Threshold
Status:
- Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC
Module: Powertrain Control Module
Diagnostic Trouble Code details
THEFT Detected, Vehicle Immobilized.
This DTC may be caused by :
Communications with the IC timing out.
An invalid response from the IC.
A disable message from the IC.
===END PCM DTC P1260-21===
===OBDII DTC None===
Successfull DTC reading, no error codes found
Module: On Board Diagnostic II
===END OBDII DTC None===
===ABS DTC None===

Module: Anti-Lock Brake / Traction Control Module
===END ABS DTC None===
===IC DTC None===
Successfull DTC reading, no error codes found
Module: Instrument Cluster
===END IC DTC None===
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure what why these came up as I had non before so I reset them and turnd car off/on and reconnected FORSCAN and no DTC cdes came back.
is this anything to worry about? Car drives 100% so far since update.
Thanks

I don't think you need to worry about the U DTC codes as these are just advising that the OBD lost communication with the module itself

I thought it might of just been something like that. All seems fine now but I will give it a scan again after a few drives just to make sure.

Jbeer is it possible to activate the tyre deflation system with elm config and if so did you manage to get it working?

Jbeer is it possible to activate the tyre deflation system with elm config and if so did you manage to get it working?

Yes it is possible and only 2 tick boxes needed:

HEC Module

Page 1 - EPB (Level 1) / DDS (Level 2)

BCM Module

DDS (Focus facelift, Kuga)

remember to reset the DDS, you'll find it in the menu in a similar way the eco mode menu is, I'd go pump your tyres first tho ;)

. Well done getting it updated! :)
