Focus Ecoboost Mk3

Featured Replies

Afternoon,

March is coming up and I'm looking at replacing my current dirty DERV for a petrol engine car (preferably Ecoboost).

I spoke to my neighbour who has a MK3 Focus (Arnold Clark company car) and he seems to like it. I'm looking at changing to petrol from diesel because I don't cover the mileage to warrant the headaches of running a diesel car, especially when it's fitted with loads of crap like DMF's, DPF's etc etc.

Trim level for the new car would be either a Titanium or Titanium X and it would have to be the pre-facelift because I don't think I can afford a brand spanker.

What are owner's thoughts on the 1.0 Ecoboost in 125hp guise and the vehicle in general? Current car has 60K on the clock and bound to go kupang! at some point...

Ecoboost 125 good engine, economical but dont expect published economy figures.. focus mk3 in general quite reliable, a few electrical/ electronic issues but no more than other manufacurershave with modern technology.

My mum loves her 1.0 125 ecoboost Focus and I was really impressed with it when I drove it.

She does 90% town driving, short journeys and gets low 40 MPG. I can't see why it won't be capable of 50 MPG for commuting.

Just make sure you get the 125 with 6 speed box, it is much better than the 100 5 speed.

Thanks all. My daily commute is about 7 miles and 90% of that is on A roads, but I've found that especially during winter the car simply isn't warming up fully by the time I reach work. I can pull in the car park and already see the temp gauge starting to drop, that's even after sustaining 60mph cruise for a good 4 or 5 miles. As mentioned before I also don't do the mileage to justify the extra headaches and cost of a diesel, and the petrol will be quieter too.

A guy at work recommended the Fiesta ST but I'm not a performance car person, and I found the ride to be too stiff at low speeds. :)

Sounds like the Ecoboost sot will suit you then! I can't wiat to get one myself next year. :)

Let us know if you get one!

I found a 1.0 125 perfectly adequate in normal driving although I like the extra poke of the 1.6 150 - I get low 40's mpg on a run and 33-35 around town. I believe that ecoboost petrols do have DMF's fitted, although I understand petrols aren't as tough on them as diesels. Anyone with a better tech understanding able to shed further light?

I've got a Mk3 after two 1.6 petrol Focus Zetecs (Mk2 and MK2.5). And honestly, I wouldn't go back to them. The 1.0 125ps is a brilliant piece of kit. I've said it before but it's put the fun back into driving for me ( and I've been driving cars for 40 years now!!!!

1.0 ecoboost will be quickest to warm up.

It has an iron block and split cooling system specifically for that purpose.

When I take my mums car to work, I can get less than a mile down the road and stop at some lights, the car will be almost to temperature and already activating stop start, lol.

True the 1.0 is fast to warm up, but the 1.6 150 only takes a mile or so to reach the mid point on the temp gauge in this recent cold weather after spending the night outside on the driveway. I'd at least consider it given the relatively marginal mpg gain with the 1.0 125 over the 1.6 150.

It depends on the sort of performance and mpg you want.

I have gone for the 1.5 due to the extra performance, but don't want to take anything away from how great the 1.0 is...

Start stop, ugh, is there a way of turning it off permanently? Unnecessary wear and tear on the starter motor just to save a teaspoon of fuel...

On a side note I took my PCV hose off today and found a thin film of black oil inside. Hope it won't clog up my oil feed pipe any time soon.

Stop start has a different motor and battery to the normal ones so I wouldn't worry. It restarts really fast, wasn't sure I'd like it, but been really impressed.

You can override it with a button, per journey.

Yes they have a heavy duty starter motor and battery designed to take the extra stress of turning on and off regularly. I've never heard of any issues relating to stop/start either.

There's a button on the centre console next to the heated window buttons which switches the start/stop off for the journey. You need to use it each journey.

A few issues with the 1.6 150 S/S not working properly have been reported, although mine has been fine. Perhaps just isolated problems.

What is a DMF and what does this do I have heard of DPF (diesel particulate filter) I think ?

DMF = Dual Mass Flywheel. The flywheel is in two concentric parts connected by springs to damp out the impulses from the engine. This is supposedly an improvement over the older method of having the springs in the clutch driven plate but it's more expensive to fix if a problem develops.

Thank you Mike

Really useful thread, I'm more or less in the same boat in that I ordered a new focus 1.0 125 a few days ago to arrive in march just in time for the plate switchover. Currently have a 1.4 fiesta 59 plate and was worried about changing to a 1 litire but the reviews of the eco boost are saying its really good.

You won't be disappointed with the 1l eco boost. I've had mine for a year now , it's quick if you want it to be, comfortable ride and dependant on the model some nice gadgets. The only downside is the poor m.p.g. compared to stated figures.

The ti vct units are designed to be revved to get the most from them though an older car I can hit 80mph in 4th with lots of revs to spare so the newer ones should be okay but if you need it to shift don't be afraid to give it son revs as a result the mpg will drop but they don't get near the claimed figures anyway

As long as I get between 45 and 50 mpg then I'll be a happy bunny. Where I live you get used to the pattern of the traffic lights and I can therefore anticipate when I need to lift off for them.

Amazes me how many people race up to the lights even when they're on red and emergency stop...

im gettig 50mpg most of the time, 8 miles each way per day, a roads through 2 towns. im happy with that.

most ive got is 60mpg on motorway trip of 132miles

I'm averaging around 35 m.p.g. at the moment, when I bought my car with around 6k on the clock it was around 31. The most on I've achieved on a long run is low 40, I am certainly not a heavy right foot driver either. Have a look at some of my previous posts about the m.p.g. topic .

fuel ecomomy is largley down to reading the road ahead and every car around you.

Also found the 1.0 ecoboost especially has a lot less engine braking , so i find myself coming off throttle alot earlier before rounabouts etc.
