Engine Stall

Featured Replies

Please help. Hubby has just changed the glow plugs on my mondeo St Tdci and now the engine stalls when idling (seems to run ok on boost). It also looks like the engine is trying to rip itself off the engine mounts. He has also changed the oil and oil filter. Any idea as to what the problem is would be greatly appreciated as local garages not v helpful and just keep quoting ££££££ to look. Thanks

Run the car at revs for about 10 minutes then let it idle. See if the engine stalls then. As for the mounts, it sounds like they are far past there use by date. I soils have those replaced!

Hi jeebowhite

Thanks for the reply. I dropped one of the nuts that connect electrics to the glow plugs and couldn't find it anywhere, even took all hoses off egr down to intercooler and still couldn't find it. How likely is it that its been sucked up and caused catastrophic damage to inlet valves etc ? Presumed nut had rolled away somewhere :(

when refitting intake manifold have you disturbed the seals?

Seals look intact but removed carbon build up, just had glow plugs out again and there is oil and what looks like swarf round two of them, starting to think I missed that nut and it's gone into the engine :(

It's unlikely to have been sucked in I don't think, its more likely it hit the splash shield or went elsewhere out the bottom of the car.

if nut had dropped down an inlet port then only 1 glowplug would maybe show signs of debris, not 2 , just a case of rethinking what youve undone to access glowplugs,( egr valve, manifold, pipes.) have you had a go at cleaning egr valve, maybe stuck open sufficiently to stall engine.

Egr is blanked off with 2mm stainless plate so don't think its that, however I'm giving the egr a boogie out anyway. Took the car for a run round the block the other day and when on boost its rapid just when in fourth at 30 for example the car jerks quite violently been advised by garage it could be crank related as it sounds like it's only on three cylinders ££££££££££££££ :(

Meant cam related not crank :)

time to get the glow plugs out then and get compression tester in there
