Whats My Old Focus Realistically Worth?

Recommended Posts

Just about put my old focus back to stock, as much as I can be bothered to anyway. Interior is back to how it should be, pretty clean and tidy for a 10year old car.

Exterior wise it still has a rear ST bumper fitted, still has genuine privacy glass fitted to the rear side windows and still has the wing mirror repeaters retro-fitted.

Other than that it's completely back to stock.

It's a mk2 05 plate Ford Focus hatchback 5 door 1.6 petrol 115

Usual standard ghia trim with the standard ford 6000cd headunit

Spacesaver spare wheel though I could include a full size spare with boot risers with it if it actually added much value

It has done 125K and is declared SORN

Has only got reciepts for the cam and clutch changes and for the last 3 services, but the service book does have 9 service stamps in it.

It had the cam belt changed at 98K and the clutch changed at 120K. Also had the rear drop links replaced at some point between the two.

So though it's high ish mileage, the major things have already been changed and it's a good solid runner. No mechanical faults.

Bad points are the usual wear and tear for a 10year old car so the odd scratch and stone chip here and there and a small dent or two caused by inconsiderate people parking next to it.

Also recently discovered that the front passenger side spring has snapped so the new owner will have to replace both front springs.

Taking all that into account, what's it actually worth?

Google is littered with valuation sites, most of which want my address details so they can bombard me with marketing and the likes of wewantanycar offer me 800quid for it which is day light robbery

So what is actually an honest fair valuation of it taking into account the work already done on it (clutch+cam) and the work needed to be done (front springs)?

I would reckon about £2000 ~ £2500 tops, with 12 months ticket. Probably more £2k though. Problem is, the market is saturated with mk2 focii so people can afford to be choosy.

Yup thats pretty much what I was told a few months ago

I'm only looking for 2 grand for it and even thats negotionable

Had some complete twonk view it the other day, completely checked it over in detail, tried making out there was a lot wrong with it when there isnt and tried to make out that he would have to do 500-1000quids worth of work on it. Completely talking out of his back passage and said the most it is worth is 1500. Spat his dummy right out when I said I was not going to go bellow 1800.

Even made up a story of there being another focus on a 55plate up the road from me with only 60k on the clock in better condition with better service history (even though he hadnt been to view it yet) and that was going for 1500.

I told him he was more than welcome to go and view and buy the better car and pay only 1500 for it, but I'm not in a rush to sell and I'm not going to drop the price any further.

He threw a strop and eventually offered to go up to 1600 but no further. My answer stayed the same so he got quite aggressive throwing a right temper tantrum and sped off up the road.

You can see why he's been looking for a car for 6 months if thats the way he goes on

Unfortunately the world is full of twonks like him. It is difficult in this day and age to get a decent private sale, hence WBAC and so forth are doing a great trade.

I paid £3700 for my mondeo last may, so the car was just over 7 years old, had 103k on the clock, no real service history (receipts for repairs etc but no stamped books) and the usual wear and tear articles - that was a trade sale.

If you sell privately, I see no reason why you could not ask for £3500 and compromise at £2800

I bought my mk2.5 focus at 125k, 58 plate (early 2009), full service history with fresh MOT and a complete service done, £3995. That was sept last year. The mk2s were at the 3k mark then, a few good examples. I think putting it up at 3.5 will leave you with a car gathering dust as no one looks at it.
