Hi All

Owned my S-Max 240 Ecoboost for a few months now and generally been fine.

However yesterday my wife tried to start the car and took a while for it to turn over, then it vibrated a lot when it did start and Engine Management Light came on. She turned car off and then started it 10 mins later and it was fine and EML light went off.

She tried to start it again this morning and it vibrated again on start-up and EML light remains on. She drove a short distance and started car up again and it was fine but EML light remains on.

I will be taking it to the garage in next few days but any ideas what could be causing the start-up issue? Is it anything common with these engines? Thanks

you need to read the error codes to be sure, but it sounds like the air fuel ratio is not right (possibly MAF sensor) or it could be the crankcase sensor is intermittent.

Check both these cables and connections, make sure they are not chaffed or loose.

Right got the code read and pointing towards fuel pressure being low.

The car is now in limp mode and will not go over 3000rpm.

I have a feeling it could be the fuel filter since the car ran out of fuel a few weeks but....

It actually cut out at the pumps but then car started fine then cut out twice! Thats seemed odd at the time if the car had ran out of fuel!

Anyway I am hoping since the fuel ran so low it clogged the fuel filter. Any ideas on cost of fuel filter and time to fit?

Also how do I get car out of limp mode. I cleared the EML and turned car on and off but still in limp mode.

Just hoping its not anything worse...

hope its not a blocked fuel filter, it hasnt got one as such, only a non servicable filter of sorts,part of the tank sender unit/pump in tank

I got a 3rd party warranty so fingers crossed then!

I know the new focus' had it but I didnt know if it was the same setup for the SMAX, however as far as I know it should be a replacement fuel filter. They acn be around £30 or so, and the time taken varies. It starts with maybe 20 - 30 minutes and depends on how much priming you do! Prime it properly and you can find it only adds a few minutes to that! Otherwise, some people take an average of 30 - 45 minutes.

As its an ecoboost (petrol) there probably is no filter as such - more of a screen around the pump in the tank and not a serviceable part.

Read the ops post and its the ecoboost 2.0 petrol direct injection. Not diesel

Well in that case i suppose they would have to replace the fuel pump (as well as the fuel filter), which looks to be covered under warranty. I really hope so!

Dont admit to running tank dry!!

Agreed, just tell them you got the tank to about 150 miles and it just stopped working even though the gauge showed otherwise. Then it's down to them to prove that you ran it dry and caused the damage

Right so got the car checked over and coming back with fuel pressure issue.

Guy at garage said he cant diagnose the exact part but could be the fuel pump. So I need to go main dealers. They also said fuel pump will also need to be coded from main dealers? Is that the case?

The garage was originally going to charge me for a new fuel filter until I pointed out that cant be done without changing the pump.

Pump wont need coding regardless the intank pump or highnpressure pump, just sounds like they dont want to guess whats wrong.

Looks like main dealer your option now.
