Vat Charged By Mechanic On Parts

Featured Replies

Ok just need to clarify VAT charges by a mechanic,

recently had more work done on my 06 s max, handbrake assembly needed replacing as the cable had snapped, my invoice provided by the mechanic charged me £157 for the part then added vat but I have since found that the part could have been purchased by myself for that price so vat has been added again, should I be contacting the mechanic and ask for the vat back?

Garages often have a mark up on parts so you may not have been charged twice.

He not going to buy it for same price as you and not make anything on parts, thats normal to add some or charge retail

I have contacted ford where he brought the part and it was £122 + vat and that's what they quoted me so vat has been charged again. surely I should only pay vat on labour as he is not selling the part,? only fitting and obviously I could have supplied the part!

He is selling you the part and labour to you. So did he sell the part to you for 122 + vat at 20%?or 146.20+vat20%

Did he quote you a price for doing the the job (parts and labour and vat )

Just re read your post, looks like he has marked up the price of handbrake, then vat will be added to final bill.

The price from ford may have been a discounted price and he charged you recommened retail price, thats normal .

allways get a quoted price inc vat

he told me the part would be £150 from lifestyle ford as I had done some searching for the part online, also he said he gets the same price as me for the part so no discount, I was self employed for over 10 years and now work in retail some have some experience on vat so just want to make sure I can contact the mechanic, also he's vat reg so he can ask for a vat receipt.

if it was a smaller amount I would not mind but £30 is a bit much..

£122+vat seems very cheap from ford for you, you did well getting that quote , when retail is at least £159.35+ vat according to fordparts uk

Speak to the mechanic and ask his reasoning for the difference.

I always expect quotes from garages to be exclusive of VAT and expect it to be added onto the quote itself. I used to work in the print trade, and that was how we used to do it, but we would make it clear that the price quoted would be subject to VAT, as a lot of customers would tweak the orders a bit here and there and it was time consuming to keep changing the quote to account for the extra VAT.

Clarify with the mechanic by all means, but it is what it is in my opinion.
