gers89 Posted May 27, 2015 Share Posted May 27, 2015 Hi all how long should it take a garage to replace a turbo my dealer I brought car from picked it up yesterday at 4 I rang him today and they started working on it This morning I was hoping to have the car back tomorrow or Friday I am now thinking with how long it has taken already it might be next week before I see my car again has anyone had a turbo changed and how long did they keep your car as I am going to get it looked at from a different mechanic when I get it back to see if everything had been done correctly as the dealer hasn't giving me much hope till now Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TomsFocus Posted May 28, 2015 Share Posted May 28, 2015 1.6 TDCi? Shouldn't take more than a day, loads of access to the turbo but there are a few 'extras' that need doing (cleaning sump etc). ColinFO Posted May 28, 2015 Share Posted May 28, 2015 It's very possible that they have sent your turbo to be repaired by an outside specialist. Ask them about the warranty on the new/refurbed turbo as the specialists all state the warranty invalid if other work has not been done on the oil delivery system. They do this because they know the turbo will fail again if it hasn't been done. here's a link for gap turbos http://www.gap-turbos.com/fitting/fitting-guide/ You will probably have to haggle with them to do the other work and if they won't, I'd advise you to have it done yourself and keep the proof as it is a known fault on these cars. You may get somewhere with trading standards if needed as there's plenty evidence on line that replacing just the turbo is not repairing the fault, it's only curing a symptom. TomsFocus Posted May 28, 2015 Share Posted May 28, 2015 As Colin says, if they don't do the other work the turbo will fail again soon...it's not might, it's will lol. So hopefully they are doing that. These turbo's fail so often that I'd assume the garage would purchase one and then send yours back for reconditioning, it's not like it's a rare turbo that won't be in stock. It's not only your time it wastes but they don't want your car taking up their ramp for days either. I also hate being without a car so I know the feeling lol, and I would not be happy if 5 hours labour took 4 days lol, so good luck I guess! 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
gers89 Posted May 29, 2015 Author Share Posted May 29, 2015 Said yesterday it was getting done the bloke has been very arsey with me wanting to find out about my car not the best customer service I have received but funny enough not the worst but I just want my car back I know the jobs that have got to be done with a new turbo I also know that they don't take 4 days and it's not hard to do 50-60 miles then plug in diagnoics to find out if anything else has to be changed I'm just feed up with how I was treated over the bank holiday weekend and not happy with the assistance I got of them just want to be able to go out not take a bus and train to work Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Pink Panther Posted May 30, 2015 Share Posted May 30, 2015 When not if changing a turbo on a 1.6 the oil feed pipe to the turbo should be thoroughly cleaned or replaced along with the bottom feed bolt, as there is a gauze in the bottom one that tends to block up from carbon, the sump needs to come off and pick up pipe should be changed, then a new filter with flush oil and run for a minimum of 10 minutes, then drain replace with another new filter and correct oil, 4 hours including the test drive, or longer when someone has been at it before and round the bolts and over tightened them for the pick up pipe , absolutely pointless otherwise Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

TomsFocus Posted May 30, 2015 Share Posted May 30, 2015 So they changed the turbo (albeit not properly) and it's still in limp mode? Have they checked to see if the new turbo is dead from lack of oil where they haven't done the work properly? Assuming it isn't dead yet, next thing I would check is the DPF. I would guess it's blocked and that probably finished off the turbo in the first place. Also check the EGR because that's probably stuck open which caused the DPF to clog... Then proceeded to change the Turbo and said fault still exists I am almost certain you are not billable/liable to pay for the work already done as they misdiagnosed the problem.. Hope you get it sorted. Out of interest where abouts do you live? I had my turbo changed on my old zs tdci and the garage certainly didn't do it properly as under 1000 miles later it failed again. gers89 Posted May 31, 2015 Author Share Posted May 31, 2015 Basingstoke dealer took it to Thatcham have asked for my money back a few times now and i quote he would not do that he will get the car sorted and pay for it but i had car a day and they have had it nearly a week in my book i have every right to get my money back work or no work cause i have been left without a car and they have been rude to me and kept saying cant issue refund or talk to warranty company when i spoke to them i was told to speak to the dealer etc no one has said yes i can do this and you can have it they took the car because my warranty company said i couldn't claim in the first 30 days which i get 3 months of and the first month i cant claim do seem right Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
