Focus Mk3 St (Facelift) Petrol Vs Derv?

Featured Replies

Any money saved using diesel fuel rather than petrol over this short period would be far outweighed by depreciation and the losses in buying & selling. Not very wise.

If you were buying outright yeah. Not so much, if at all on pcp

Fair enough, thought OP was buying outright.

No, on a PCP - sorry for not specifying!

Interestingly I think the GFMV on the derv is 700 higher after 2 years than the petrol version?

Going to ring the dealer tomorrow, double check and then talk figures :D

Correct the diseal does have a slightly better residual

I own a petrol mk3.5 ST and drive a diesel mk3 ST estate for work.

I also drove a diesel mk3.5 ST for a few days while my own car was having a tracker fitted and getting a scuff sorted (noticed on collection and sorted by the dealer).

I prefer the petrol ST hands down with no reservations.

I didn't buy it for economy, it's purely for fun and the performance doesn't disappoint at all.

Trust me when I say that one day you will look at the diesel model and say to yourself "Damn, Wish I'd gone for the petrol engine" 8)

agree 100% stoney.

Id always go for petrol. Any diesel I have tried never felt the same in any way. Yes the low torque is good but I find the diesels get flat very quickly when you compare to it to a turbo charged petrol engine. The fact that it red lines higher and takes the pull across the whole revs of the engine is what sells the petrol to me and always has done. I so believe that if I had a diesel I would one day be kicking myself and saying " I should of got the petrol" lol!

The car tax is another good thing with diesel but I also tell my family and friends don't buy a car just for the cheap tax as I think its a sales plough most of the time because this time next year the Government could change tax rules and every one who is paying cheap car tax may well be paying dear car tax or vice versa so for me its not a deal breaker and neither is mpg because as I said before in towns city's any car will struggle great Mpg (unless your in a rc car lol! :) ).

Then there is expensive diesel repairs as well which in my opinion out way any savings. An example is my Mother in laws sister owned a VW Scrap (I mean Golf !!! lol! ^_^ ) 2011 and was £30 a year tax . she got talked into buying this at the time with 4000 odd miles from new. she thought is was ok on mpg and when we had it for 2 weeks last summer we where putting the same amount of fuel in it as we where our own petrol car so for us that part was a no go but anyway she had it nearly 4 years she though it was ok and nice until the DPF and injectors give up. VW would not stand by it for what ever reason and so she paid all in the guts of £1000 odd to get it fixed then she sold it two month later. So when we looked at what she thought was savings on tax ect all the rest it turned out she she saved next to nothing as the little she did saved was poured back into services and fixing the likes of injectors and the DPF. sorry for ranting stoney but had to get that off my chest lol! :)

so the deal breaker is if you like the car and want to go for it. simple as that and personally the petrols are also more fun to drive and prove more reliable so in the long run money is saved as best as it can be and every one is happy lol! O by the way your new ST colour is very nice fella , a good choice you made there.

I had a couple of lads with a red Audi A1 giving my car a close once over in a Sainsburys car park last night.

Can't believe the A1 is only 115bhp :o
