Hanbrake Switch, Help

Featured Replies

I will keep this short, dashboard handbrake light stays on even when handbrake is off, no other lights , just the handbrake light.

I am aware the light isnt just to say the handbrake is on/off. Brake fluid to the max. I have done a bit of searching and I want to see if it is the hanbrake switch. IS the switch behind the handbrake, if not, where is it and How do I adjust/replace it.

1.6 tdci focus diesel 2007 mk2

Hope someone can help, Thanks

Thanks for your reply Stoney871. The H/brake switch wasnt stuck. Switched ignition on ( and tried with engine running) and pressed the switch many times but the light still did not go out (does anyone know of this switch suddenly stop working). The front pads have loads left on them , the brake fluid is to the max, there doesnt appear to be any drag from the rear brakes and only the h/brake symbol is illuminated on the dash after engine starts and h/brake is off

( so eliminating abs probs from what ive searched on the net). Would a blown fuse cause this problem ? H/brake only clicks about 3-4 times. I'm running out of ideas about this problem , can anyone HELP, Please.

May be that the handbrake has been adjusted too far and is only just disengaged thus still leaving the light on.

I'd back the adjustment off a tad and see what happens.

Thanks again Stoney871 for your reply. I've had the car for about a year and the problem has only just arisen . Taking into account wear over a year , could the auotmatic adjuster in the rear drums of caused this ?. I am going to check the rear drums tomorrow ( do I need to remove the centre nut or do I just undo the four bolts on the rear of the drum to remove the front ).

Should all be detailed in the Haynes manual I posted a link to.

Have you checked the connection on the switch for corrosion? I know it's inside the car but my switch did something similar which came down to a corroded connector :)

I havent driven the car since the light came on , but today while moving it into my garage I noticed the left/right indicators are not working on the dash but are actualy working outside front and rear. Could this be related or is it yet another problem to drive me crazy. I have the fuseboard layout and their meanings for bothin the engine compartment and for the one on the passanger side internal, but cant see which fuse to try for the indicators ( the pdf for mk2 and mk2.5 fusboards and fuses) ANY ideas realy appreciated for all or any of the above , Thanks

What the heck, drove the car to my local ford dealer/parts department , I noticed the h/brake light go out and the indicator internal lights and sound start working out of the blue ( WOW they must be good in that dealership to repair faults before i even get there LOL). I'm still none the wiser as to the cause of the problem. The parts department advised me against buying a new h/brake switch as the problem.

update, Light came back on and indicators stopped again. Changed the shoes on the rear drum brakes and all is ok. cant understand how this fixed the problem as there are no sensors on the rear drums, but it has.

symptoms happened again. I think I have found the culprit, in the drivers footwell there is a fuse box , the passenger can hit this box with their feet disturbing the outer connections on the underside of the box. I disengaged the connections , then reingaged and the brake light went out and the indicators worked inside the car again straight away.
