Mondeo 1.8tdci 2009 Turbo Gone?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Bit of advice needed.

Got a Mondeo 1.8TDCI, has always been a bit smoky on start up and had a bit of turbo lag in mid range revs (had it about 6 months) 130000 miles on it.

Last week developed a rattling noise, like metal rattling round inside and running rough at low revs, but not too bad at higher speeds. Took it to a mechanic who told us it could be crankshaft and some timing issues. Anyway today my wife is on the motor way and BANG. Loss of revs, steam/smoke everywhere the lot. All oil gone and under the bonnet looks like its gone behind the engine round the turbo area, oil all over the bulkhead etc. Recovery man thinks it could be the turbo has gone.

Can anyone shed any light on this. I'm a fairly competent DIY mechanic so does anyone reckon this could be the turbo and is this a fixable issue, or should i cut my losses and get rid?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

turbo boom with smoke and oil is a common side effect, so I suspect your probably right with the turbo.

I would be looking to replace the full turbo unit though, as opposed to just the cartridge.

Thanks for this. Will be getting it up on the stands for a proper look this weekend. Have heard its standard to replace the oil feed pipe as well. I will definitely take your advice on the full turbo replacement so many thanks
