Performance Fuels

Featured Replies

What is everyones opinion on performance fuels such as V-Power etc?

Worth it or not and why?

As the advert say's it clean your fuel system and giving extra ump. ...personally I don't use it every time I fill up. I alternate every time but saying that I only used shell

I use V-Power every time because I like the fact that it helps to clean parts of the engine, and I think my car will get a small performance boost from the fuel being turbo and remapped. But for many people it won't be worth the extra cost.

I don't bother but maybe I should, I've always used a separate fuel additive on a regular basis.

I've recently discovered BG244 as recommended by others on the forum & must say I actually saw a difference.

I think I'll just stick to putting a can of this in the tank every 3 or so months especially now I found kwikfit sell it (convenient to pick it up locally than order online).

On my ST I've tested normal vs performance fuels and found the engine runs smoother and feels smoother when accelerating. As for performance gains I'd say there isn't any in my opinion. There more for the cleaning of the engine than performance but I can't justify the 10p-15p more a litre for it even though I do use it every fill.

Depends. I've always used decent fuel - mostly - and a splash of RedEx, but I've recently tried an experiment with Vpower Diesel (in a Diesel Mondeo).

My conclusion is that while the car does run better on the Vpower, if you are looking for increased mpg to pay for the use of more expensive fuel, it doesn't quite do that.

On the other hand, it seems to smoke a bit less if you welly it, and it does run a bit more smoothly (it is easy to deceive yourself about this, but on a couple of occasions, I've just been driving down the road and thought 'my, the car is running smoothly today' before remembering what I had done differently). Not quite sure what happens if you, say, run it on 50:50 Vpower and ordinary fuel (with or without a splash of additive), but that might work well. (Or, not, of course, haven't tried it).

So, if you are trying to save money on fuel, it probably doesn't quite get there. If, on the other hand, you are trying to look after the car more generally, the fact that it smokes less and runs that bit smoother may well make up for that (and there may be, due to lower smoke, fewer regens, and as fuel economy does take a hit during a regen, that might push the numbers a bit closer to break even).

I used to be pretty cynical about the 'pay ten pence extra for better fuels' deal, but now I'd say, financially, there isn't much in it. Not sure about, eg, Esso, BP, Total, etc, but Shell gets a cautious recommend from me.

This is a question that I am needing to make a decision on. And so far I am leaning towards using V-Power, simply for the benefits the additives provide.

Picked up a new Fiesta this week and have been just getting used to it, but I always use spreadsheets to visualise costs, and unless I have royally messed up the figures (assuming averages) the cost difference over 1 years @ 10,000 miles with 40MPG is :

Ok, it didn't like my copy/paste of the excel spreadsheet.

Supreme Unleaded @ 128p/l over 1 year = £1455

Regular Unleaded @ 115p/l over 1 year = £1307

250 gallons / 1136.52 litres

That is very dependant on prices though as well as MPG and mileage, so I'd probably budget £150 - £200 per year extra for fuel to account for MPG/mileage changes.

Only issue I have is the nearest Shell station is 13 miles away, however it is on the way to/from work, otherwise I'll end up being lazy and filling up with Texaco Supreme at the local station.
