K&n 57s-4000

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. Has anyone fitted one of these to the 1.6 Ecoboost 180ps? Am looking to start my mods and its a good place to start at around £120 if you shop around. You Tube clip shows the dyno readout increase of 18bhp and the fact that its a semi closed design rather than a full on open cone should help alot with heatsoak issues. I would prefer the induction noise of a full on open filter though.

Auto Specialists have developed a kit too with an open filter and large mounting plate to aid with heat issues but thats around £230. What do you all think?

  • The mpg will fall because you cant help giving it a bit more stick to listen to the lovely induction noise! I like the amplified dump valve/blow off hiss too!:)

  • Or just buy the K&N E-9289 filter as i did for £54 delivered off Amazon, use the standard lid which fits fine and save £70 instead of buying the 57s-4000 kit which is a E-9289 filter with a nice r

  • Hmmm tempted to buy that but just ordered the E-9289 of Amazon and will see how it sounds and performs first. Can the lid just not be left off altogether? Or will this cause heatsoak or other problems

I was thinking of buying one of these a while ago but was advised the 18bhp would probably be unnoticeable.

18bhp would definitely be noticeable but its if you actually get that in the real world or just 3bhp! Will be looking into intercooler, exhaust and remap at a later date too.

Ive just been looking at the pics of the K&N filter online and if you remove the cap in the end for better performance and induction noise then what will stop any crap going straight up the middle of the filter and into the engine? I was thinking of just cutting the end out of my standard filter as i cant see any difference!

Just been out for a run with the lid off the airbox, thought there would have been more induction noise but was rather disappointing actually!

If you look at the picture, you'll see the filter is tapered down to the intake end; this is also described on the K & N website, so no dust etc can get drawn in. So by removing the cap, you increase the filter's size, theoretically increasing the airflow. I've just ordered one for my Mk3 1.6 TDCi, to replace a standard replacement K&N, which I've used on different Focus models for about 6 years. We'll see how it goes...

Its still looks open though andy regardless of it tapering so how can it stop debris getting into the turbo?

The bottom end is sealed.

Look again Andy, only one end looks sealed while the bung is in place and when you remove the bung no ends are sealed? The bottom end as you say is the open end which fits into the air box pipe to the turbo and when you remove the bung the other end is now open too isnt it which is what you see on the other pic of the side of the airbox?

Ive just ordered the filter without the lid off Amazon for £54 delivered. Its the K&N E-9289 filter, same filter that is in the 57s-4000 kit but minus the lid with a pretty K&N logo for £120. I might take the Dremel to the inside of the factory lid to smooth out the egg box effect so its like the K&N lid as i think is only there to add some strength.

My filter has just arrived! Will fit it tonight after work and see how it sounds. Had a peek at it in work and when you remove the bung in the end there is a conical filter inside the main filter so it is not actually open all the way through as the pictures suggest.

Was about to say the same, photo of my newly delivered filter as viewed from the air intake end.post-33049-143576324188_thumb.jpg

Did you order the kit with the lid Andy or just the filter as i have? Ive fitted mine but cant be bothered giving it a run out tonight so will see how it sounds tomorrow. It sounds good when you rev it though.

I ordered the kit Wes, as I was already running a standard K & N. As you say, it seems to have a nice sound to it when revved. Waiting now for the drive to work in the morning to see what difference, if any, it makes.

I only went for the filter on its own out of your kit as it was £70 cheaper without the lid. You must have more spare cash than me!

Or more money than sense LOL!

Does the lid come with new bolts ?

Or

Do we use existing ones?

  • Author

From what i read Lenny you use the existing bolts.

From what i read Lenny you use the existing bolts.

Thanks mate,

I was hoping it would come with as I'm one missing lol

Fell down through the engine bay when i was changing battery earlier in the year and i never bothered chasing it to retrieve at the time,

Ill pick one up in time from ford or breakers,

Ill be depending on the wife's fitting skills and driving reviews for the present time as i cant drive have a acetabual fracture (leg socket on pelvis)

But my focus is due a service and needs filter replaced,

So im having one of these fitted prior to handing the car in to ford for servicing.

I believe the kit lids can be a bit tricky to fit Lenny so i hope your wife has a bit of patience! One review i read stated they removed the whole box so they could get the lid to sit properly. Hopefully yours will be a good easy fit. :)

Well, i took a little detour on the way to work this morning to try the filter out and i was mightily impressed! The pick up was so much quicker and just felt like that was how the car should have been from the factory. The induction noise was a bit lacking even with the bung removed which was disappointing as i am still a bit of a boy racer but i am really happy with the way the car drives now. All in all £54 well spent! :)

My instructions will have the neighbours watching lol

"pull it out vicki"

"Push it in vicki"

"form a tight seal around it vicki"

The airbox is secured to the chassis via two M8 bolts,

Removing the box to get the lid on would mean these don't get fitted again, because the lid would be on,

I've done a guide on induction filter upgrade before though,

She can follow that:

To which Vicki's reply will be "is it in"?

Be good of you can get some numbers from forscan with this, MAF and MAP, torque and RPM.

MAP is capped but the MAF should give us some interesting numbers.

Fitted mine in 5 minutes last night, perfect fit. Car feels much smoother and pulls better. Sounds good too!
