Switching Sides Of Rear Fog Lamp And Reverse Light On Focus Mk2

Featured Replies

Hello (:

I bought a Focus Mk2 05 plate a while back, UK-registered and RHD but I bought it in Europe to take with me when moving to the UK.

It's my first car and I needed it rather urgently, so I didn't think much about the rear fog lamp until it was pointed out to me at the MOT. It's got the European set-up, so the rear fog lamp is on the UK nearside and the reverse light is on the offside. As the fog light has to be on the offside to pass I will need to switch the two around.

Does anyone know how I go about in doing this? Is it something that can be easily done by myself? Is there any garage in London that could do it without charging lots of money for what probably is a simple job?

Thanks very much for any help!

Tom

Is there enough length on the loom to simply flip the wires to the opposite sides and the just source the replacement lights on ebay?

You'll need to extend the wiring looms to swap over the sides.

Instead of buying a whole new pair of lenses just buy a clear left hand lens (UK spec lens) and instead of changing the right hand lens to the UK spec red one just fit a red bulb instead of the clear one.

Having two clear lenses at the rear will be cheaper for you and this is actually a well known modification which is fully street legal.

Thanks very much, good idea to swap to a white lens so I only need to buy one new one.

How easy will it be to extend the wiring looms, for someone with very limited mechanical skill? On the Mk1 I understand both wires run along one side of the car, which should make switching them over slightly easier. Is it the same case here?

Can't say for sure.

If you get your head up under the back of the car you'll get a good idea of what you need to do.

Hi. I also have this issue. I think in reverse.

I want to import a UK car to Spain. So I have to swap the reverse light and fog light side. I have already purchased the reflectors and will fit them easily enough so that is not an issue. However I need to do something so that the lighting wiring is swapped. i.e. right hand side light comes on when reverse and left hand side of car when I put on the fog.

I have taken out the boot trims and can see where the wiring comes up on each side from the lower fog light/reverse light. See in the video linked below.

My plan is to cut the wiring on each side. And run 2 twin core wires along the rear of the boot and rejoin them swapping the sides. It seems a bit overkill but I cannot think of any other way... I would have hoped there was an easy swap I could do upfront somewhere near the wiring where the wires all meet.. does anybody have any better ideas?

I don´t think I can just run the positives and leave negatives as is as I think the negatives may be on different circuits/grounds but also open to advice here... any help appreciated.

If you want to make a clean and reversible job of it, you could source an extra four plugs to make two short removable extension looms just the width of the bumper.

That’s what I’ve done though for slightly different reasons - managed to get male and female plugs/pins to match the reverse lamp/fog lamp wiring so I could double up the reversing lamps and rear fogs. Had some spare connectors luckily but had to find some of the connector pins to make the looms up. Will have a dig to see if can still find the details. Think the connectors can be found through Farnell etc

Just note the facelift and pre-facelifts have different plugs etc so loom connectors aren’t interchangeable.

You're looking for something like this

googling Tyco or Delphi 2-pin connector.

Worst case you can cut the loom and rewire your existing connectors in to opposite sides.

Other way would be to see if the feeds could be swapped over if they both come from the multi-plugs at the GEM module but would either need wiring cut and reconnecting or pins swapped at the connectors which is a tricky job if you’re not familiar with that sort of thing
