I have scoured the internet to find an answer to the problem of the EML coming on and the car going into limp mode, from turbos, to faulty connections on injectors etc. I have had the turbo cleaned twice and been told it now requires replacement . Does ANYONE know what the definitive answer is . It happens at random times when driving there does not seem to be any driving situation that is the same.. It is driving me mad and I think the car will have to go !!!

do you know what fault codes were thrown up as its impossible to give an answer, what symptoms is the car showing.

Agree with mintalkin here, we need codes and symptoms otherwise its impossible to help.

Ford S max 57 reg...119k miles Ok this started when driving along about 50 mph ESP light came on and EML light too. Cancelled EML message with OK button , car in limp mode. When car stopped and re started all normal for maybe 1 mile or 30 miles , it then repeats itself, The worst it has been is , as soon as restarted car and moved 3 yards EML comes on again. The turbo has been cleaned twice and it is exactly the same but may go for a day and half before the EML and ESP lights come on together. Driving style makes no difference and you cant replicate the fault by driving carefully or thrashing the car . I don't have any codes from the garage , I gave the ones from the dashboard test display to the garage , ( DTC 01 F00616 & DTC 02 C42068 ), they tell me they don't mean anything to them they should be P codes. and their computer shows a turbo faulty code . OK that is a starting point. The esp light can be an indication of a fault with the wiring of the abs, but I would start by replacing the fuel filter. Those error codes are instrument cluster codes which most the time bear no resemblance to the true error, it is worth investing in a modified elm cabl (15 quid) check my guides in my signature then look for the forscan topic.

Unfortunately you need the codes from the ecu directly. If you were local I would offer to read them, but to be honest for the cheap price of the cable I would get one.

I would start with the fuel filter, check when it was last replaced and replace it if it's old. The esp light though could indicate it's as simple as an earthing fault, so check the earth points near the gearbox and the battery, clean them up if necessary with a wire brush and then replace the earth to it if they are dirty, or corroded.

James Thanks for the reply, the car is booked in for a full service on Saturday next so the fuel filter will be changed then. Plus it is going on the IDS system, whatever that is , so maybe then I can find out more . I have driven it around over the last 2 days, locally never over the 40/45 mark and the light hasn't come on ..... Yet.... Anyone else have any ideas ?? Mike

Turbo over boost probably, what engine you got?

Full service does not mean filters are changed. If can't recall if they should be but most often they aren't.

IDS is the computer, the Ford diagnostic machine, so they will be charging you to plug it in lol.

IDS plug in free of charge.. I have specified all filters changed. .

Will add turbo over boost to the list of probables and the engine is the Peugeot 2 ltr

overboost most likely then as its 2.0 , variable vanes get stuck and cause overboost, thats detected and puts engine in to limp mode, as long as you dont go full throttle or there abouts then overboost doesnt occour and limp mode not enabled, as what by youre describing your doing.

Thanks for all the advice ideas I have listed them and will pass to mechanic on the weekend. The pity is that the car ideal for our purpose and I enjoy driving it, I don't really want to pass it on , and it doesn't seem fair to dump the problem onto someone unsuspecting .. Any other thoughts ?? M

More often than not it's a simple error, but honestly you should buy the modified cable and download forscan it allows you to diagnose a lot more. We are still working blind atm, because we don't have a lot to go on but if you get a thorough scan with forscan done then it tells us all the error codes reported ad they should be seen and allows us to help you diagnose it.

I bought a modified cable when dezwez sold them on here as I wanted a 500000 speed, I also bought my first one off preee when he made one for me. Honestly the best investment ever. You can buy them for 15 quid, they work on ford's and mazda and the forscan software is free, it had its niggles (some sensors are mislabeled I. E. I diagnosed a faulty airbag it told me left side but the error code was right side, however the resistance readings etc where perfect.

I understand what you mean but I don't have the technical ability to carry out my own repairs to that degree, I can change a bulb and that's it !! I just need to know that what I'm being told by the garage I understand and they are not ripping me off . If the turbo is choked or faulty and is causing the EML to come on , why is the ESP light coming on as well ..?

Yeah but even if you cannot do it yourself you can get your mech to do it for you.

Had the service done and the fuel filter changed , it didn't look too bad really, the only code they came up with was P2263

P2263 = fuel delivery issue & / or turbo' boost issue

I think you're right. It has a whistling sound now !

Our old ford escort whistled when the turbo kicked was a small hole in the air pipe. Sorry not a mechanic but have had the whistle on an old ford. Hope you get it sorted the smax is a great car love ours.

there are a few things which can throw a 2263 code, it could be a split rubber hose especally the intercooler hose on the bottom of the egr valve, a sticking egr valve these can be removed and cleaned but its a messy job, the turbo actuator or vanes in the turbo can also stick.

The saga continues, Have had the fuel filter changed, all the codes cleared from the comp. been using additive in the fuel to clean the turbo etc. It has been driven hard in 3rd gear etc, to clear the soot etc from the turbo vanes, a blank plate has been fitted to the EGR valve .I have now driven about 450 miles and then the ESP and EML light have come on again ..... clearing the Eml image leaves the car in limp mode and only when the car is restarted does it work normally, Code read today is P0003a Turbocharger boost control a position exceeded learning limit. circuit voltage below threshold .. I now have no idea !!

Disconnect the battery for an hour and reconnect, that should put the car in learning node...

'Learning mode' what the hell is that !!

It's basically where the ecu goes into a recalibration mode and optimises the car for the means of driving. It also resets errors and allows all electrical systems to drain and forget about any errors that may or may not exist....

OK thanks for that.. I assume you mean that the ecu has some sort of built in memory and you have to reset it by disconnecting the battery , how will that help , the car will still have some sort of fault on it that will still come up ?? I need to find out what is switching on the EML light. ...
