Focus Mk2 Onwards Rear Strut Mount Replacement

Featured Replies

A quick guide on how to do this couldn't get pics as it was pouring down.

You need

2 strut mounts

Extension bar and ratchet

Axle stands

Wheel key and 19mm socket

10mm socket 13mm socket

1.Obtain 2 strut mounts

2.Loosen off rear wheel nuts

3.Jack up car and place on axle stands

4.Remove the interior boot carpet at each side to get access to the 13mm nut in the centre of the shock remove the nut completely

5.using an extension bar remove the two 10mm bolts up inside the rear turret

6. Now pull the shock downwards this allows you to remove the mount and fit the new one

7.to replace put the two 10 mm bolts back in and leave loose

8.now go into the boot and put the new 13mm nut onto the shock and tighten up fully if its at an odd angle and the socket wont go on get someone to push the shock towards the body and it will straighten up

9.back to those 10mm bolts and tighten fully wheels back on job done

Ive never accessed the nuts from inside the boot on the mk2, always done it off the car.

That's right step as you did mine the bolts screwed out from the bottom and the nuts on the inside was tac welded they didn't need touched was a case of unbolt struts take of rear mount and replace. Tho having the correct tools helps

no need to remove the strut this way you can do it with the strut attatched takes 15 mins in all

no idea how that worked as the mount is bolted to the shock top so you need to remove the nut to get it off these are the mountspost-8800-0-77936600-1441136980_thumb.jp

There seems some confusion , both ways work, arthurs way of doing it does make sense. Does make changing them easy enough.

Reason I did it that way is it saves removing the shock and if you don't loosen the nut in the car theres no room to get the socket in after unless you remove the shock but both ways work doing it stefs way ide replace the shock

Hi

my top mount nut inside the boot is missing, anyone know where I can get the right bolt for it, the 13mm one, or will any 13mm nut do?

thanks

Any steel M8 x 1.25 nut will do.

Nice one @artscot79.  Just done this job on my dad's Focus.  Did what you suggested as the bottom shock bolt to hub was rusted round.  Tried a 15mm which just turned on the bolt head.  I didn't have a 9/16" to try hammer on so just did it from the top.  Easy enough and good to know what with any decent pot holes guaranteeing that top mount will break again in future.
