Car Sometimes Doesn't Start

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 54 plate ford fiesta

Sometimes the door light is on and will not lock

The check engine light as been on for about a year now

When I start the car up the clock time goes back to the minute

So if it's 12:34 and 14secs ... I start the car and it's 12:34 00secs

So it loses time over a few days

Now the first time it didn't start up was when I put petrol in texaco (8weeks ago)

The second time was when I put petrol in tesco (1 week ago)

And the third was today on a car park (today 5/09/15)

I've been told it might be a fuel filter cause of the cheap petrol

Might be spark plugs

Might be that the fuel is flooding something

Or might be the alternator

Does anyone know what could be the problem or had anything similar?

Thank you

Unlikely to be fuel related , a code reader may assist in identifying the issue as your car has been telling you something is wrong for a year !

When was the car last serviced ?

No the car as never let me down ever

The door came on about 3 months ago

The car didn't start up for the very first time 8 weeks ago

I've had the car for 14 months and haven't had it serviced yet

The engine light came on I got told that it is heat sensor that as broke

Thank you

I'd get it serviced & any fault codes diagnosed

Get yoursef a cheap code reader Thomas and see if any fault codes are stored then we can help from there. It will be an expensive guessing game otherwise.

Stick a set of sparkplugs in too if it hasn't been serviced for a while.

Going get the battery tested tomorrow and the alternator.

Going get them plug their computer in the car too see what's what.

Hopefully I can get it sorted out tomorrow then going book it in for a full service

It's been running fine today started it about 8 times and not a problem

It was the battery

Was going at 8v instead of 12v

Cost £50 get a new one

Now the car starts up straight away no crank at all

That in itself rings alarm bells for me.

Good to hear! A weak battery is a common cause of poor starting ability and can cause the electrics to have a mind of their own.

I would strongly recommend getting the car in for an oil (and filter) change ASAP though as per my above reply. Also, if the car has more than 100,000 miles on the odometer I'd think about doing the spark plugs and fuel filter as well - not because any of these things have as it turned out caused the starting issue, but just to ensure the car continues to be reliable and perform well.

I also have a 54 plate petrol fiesta. It has just hit 90k. I changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs.

The fuel filter made the most difference (went for a quick drive to get my oil warm) . Car starts easier & it picks up quicker when I plant my foot.

Definately worth doing for less than a tenner (for the fuel filter).

Came to £44 for 4 litres of Castrol Magnetec Fully synth

Mann filters fuel filter

Bosch Air filter

Mann filters oil filter

Already had the spark plugs. Covered less than a 1000 miles in the old car

A couple of weeks ago I fitted a Bosch S5 after my cheap little battery that came with the old car failed on me. It had survived my ICE thrashing it, a car accident and some more thrashing from the ICE.

The new battery made a massive difference too

Good to hear of a car being well maintained! B)

Ive replaced both lower ball joints and fitted rear polybushes too since March when I bought it.

Needs a new backbox but I've got the practically brand new one off the old car ;)
