The Shed Challenge - Mk4 Fiesta

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

Unsure if this is the best place to post this but I thought I would share my plans with your.

I have never owned a Ford until this week.

The story goes, a good friend of mine had a banged up MK4 Fiesta, it had been sat on his drive for a few months and nothing was really said about it. He told me that it has a seized engine and was scrap, so I offered to give him a hand to get it down the scrappy. At this point I found out that the engine actually ran, just stalled when it turned over - Doesn't sound seized to me! I gave him £50, used an angle grinder to cut the exhaust off and the thing purred just as Mr Ford intended!

After all that work, a quick pint was in order with the guys, to discuss what we were actually going to do with this shed of a car. A few pints of ideas in, we came up with the prefect plan. We all buy (about 4 of us) Mk4 Purple 1.25 Fiesta's, make them road legal, cover each others cars in tasteful mods (bonnet scoops, plywood spoilers... you get the idea) and take them for a road trip across Europe and hope they make it! The rules and stuff we will just make up on the way to stitch each other up.

Day 1 of the maintenance started yesterday. A new Stainless steel exhaust (its not really SS, but i pretend it is because it is shiny!) was fitted to her last night - Doesn't she should good! Had a few issues with drilling out the old studs but we got there in the end - Beer helped.

Tonight task is to sand the rust of her body, fill it and attempt to spray her with a colour that is somewhere near purple!

You guys have any ideas of what we should be doing to her??

Pictures, else this thread is boring!!

New Happy Owner!

Good luck and keep this thread updated! Sounds very interesting.

I can pretty much guarantee the 1.25 won't give you any problems - they are one of the best small engines (much better than the rough 1.3) and give great fuel economy too (by 1990s standards) if you are planning to cover thousands of miles.

The 1.25 does seem really solid in this car!

Well last night we decided to cut some of the surface rust off the skirts of the car, prime it and paint it - It didn't go too well. Sorry for the lack of decent photo's - I was in charge of beer and food last night!

We made a couple of mistakes last night. We took the expert advice from Steve in Halfords (who told me Mr Schmaker himself helped design the engine for my car...) about the paint to use. We showed him a picture and told him it was a Purple car. We were advised it was actually a shade of blue and walked out the the "correct halfords ford purple / blue".

We masked stuff off - Which we though was clever and professional. And got round to priming! Of course, I made a mess but nothing too bad.

Then the painting came! Well, as you likely guessing this "correct Halfords ford purple / blue" colour - was well, blue. Too late though it was being used. The other side of the car we used some left over bright red paint from my Mazda RX8. That stuff looked great!

We waited for it to dry... Paint drys in about 2 minutes when you are watching it right?

All was going good so far... The things went south.

Firstly someone, drank the beer I was drinking and told me that the "other" beer bottle was mine. I reluctantly drank it. It just felt wrong.

The masking tape was then removed. My side in Mazda red looked great! The blue side... well half the paint just peeled off because someone forgot to sand down the paintwork properly! We will need to redo this over the weekend!

Excuse the poor pictures, I will get images of the paintwork up tonight!

This looks like a really fun project and I'll keep checking on this thread for updates :)

I especially like the idea of the Top Gear style road trip. Maybe we can help you to come up with some interesting challenges to do, and make sure you drive into each others cars when stopping, after all the brakes on these cars are probably not that great :P

Looking forward to seeing this one come out in force!

Thanks guys,

Any ideas are welcome on what to do with these cars. Challenges, mods, paintwork / styling. We will gladly accept any donated parts that we could use on these car(s)!

I will keep this thread updated on our progress :)

Taking more inspiration from Top Gear, you could make up some fake company names to be painted on your car as if it's sponsored. I think "Peniston Oils" was one, which would spell something slightly different when you open the door lol.

Amazing!! I am sure we can come up with a few more of these!

And you will be chased by some angry rednecks lol

Sorry for the lack of update - The car was dropped off for an MOT on the weekend.

Fingers crossed she passes!

The real fun will begun then!
