Poor Old Vw

It looks like VW will be recalling all affected cars to sort out the issue. It sounds like they've been dragged kicking and screaming and are only doing this because it's the last option.

Rightly so too.

I sympathise with those who bought an apparent mega eco car, and now their tax is going to be tripling...

Goes to show, you can make a car look shiny, and you can be as big as you like, no matter what your name or how pretty the car looks, what lurks below can be evil!

There was something else on the news about this today, apparently VW are now blaming a couple of software engineers for the whole thing, saying they acted alone. I find that hard to believe, I mean what would be in it for them? Unless they were told they would get big bonuses if they could reduce the emissions by so many % then they would have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Also this has apparently been going on for quite a few years, and there would have been a lot of people working on the engine software - are we supposed to believe that none of them spotted this secret "code" that changes the way the engine works?

Surely owners who bought VWs in good faith won't be punished............will they?

That's what I was thinking, even if there would be some extra taxes due that should be covered by VW.

Vw would be in little position to argue and reject compensation, however whilst it's primarily nox, this could affect the engine euro rating and any software updates could well increase the ved rate...

The euro rating is a legal conformity.

The cars will have to be updated/fixed to conform to their rating.

There will not be any tax changes.

in that case its great news (or the best of a bad situation anyway)

If I was an owner of an affected car, my biggest concern would be how the car will drive after they "fix" it...

Generally speaking, the lower the emissions, the lower the performance / driveability :( :(

My take on this sorry affair is so what they 'cheated' emissions tests. There's nothing wrong with any of the so called affected cars as they are driving as 'normal '. As clearly stated when this debacle started the cars recognised they were being tested then the spoof program kicked in. After the test the spoof program stopped and reverted the car back to 'normal' with no side effects. VW should in my opinion be fined heavily and to each of the so called affected cars owners some form of compensation for stress caused etc. Maybe free services for term of ownership for example. This debacle has been blown well out of proportion and too much money spent on reporting on it. VW's are one of the best cars for fuel efficiency. Better than ford. But they're naff inside. And as the OP stated initially Pool Old VW.

IF the emissions are ordinarily within the law, why then use a software program to artificially lower them on test ?

The '' normal '' emission output must be higher than allowed or there would be no point in cheating the test, and if they are higher fixing the issue will lower them permanently - generally resulting in less engine output & consequently lesser performance

Yeah that could be a problem. My dad has a 14 reg Golf Diesel but it's only a company car, so I doubt he has much to worry about. But I know he would notice if it has reduced performance after an update and it would annoy him.

I can see what you're getting at, but this is an issue that affects a lot of people. Everyone owning a VW, Audi, Seat and other makes, if it's a diesel and is relatively new, would have a good reason to be worried. Their cars will probably go down in value or they might simply be unable to sell the car if they need to.

Also with such a massive company there are many thousands of employees who could be worried about what will happen to their jobs. This whole thing might have been over reported but it's still a serious issue for car owners.

Put simply, It's corporate fraud.

"Activities undertaken by an individual or company that are done in a dishonest or illegal manner, and are designed to give an advantage to the perpetrating individual or company. Corporate fraud schemes go beyond the scope of an employee's stated position, and are marked by their complexity and economic impact on the business, other employees and outside parties."

Slightly old news but I just heard that the software involved was created by Bosch, who warned VW about not enabling it years ago.
