Why Dos My Engine Thud When Turning It Off ? I Can See It Shake As Well On Turn Off

Featured Replies

I had my EGR valve replaced not too long ago, during the process my mechanic told me that my engine mount needed replacing and that somebody had jammed something in where the mount was ( screws I think) so he removed the screws or whatever it was.

after I got my car back I notice the engine thud when turning it off, I opened the bonnet and looked at the engine whilst somebody else turned it off and there was a fair amount of play on it with the engine shaking on turn off.

When a different mechanic had a look he tried rocking the engine with his hands and said it was not an engine mount and that it was normal for a diesel, I told him that it had never thudded/shook like this before my other friend had removed something jammed in where the mount was, unfortunately when I asked him to check it the engine wasn't thudding/shaking too bad on turn off, Sometimes it just shakes a little and other times it shakes a lot, it was only slightly shaking when he checked it for me.

I went back to the first mechanic who told me the engine mount was bad and he says it is engine mount ( despite at one point changing his mind and saying it wasn't, now he says it is the mount again) and I plan on changing it at some point.

So is it the engine mount do you think, as I said the thudding/shaking was only present after having my car returned to me after my friend replaced the EGR valve and removed something jammed in where the mount was. it did not shake/thud previously.

As I say I don't think you can really feel any play in the engine as you try to rock it

Get the mount done, see if it still happens would be the best bet, process of elimination.

Yup, I think I will.

What could it be if not the engine mount?

And how many engine mounts does an Mk2 focus have ? I'm slightly worried as my mechanic friend has momentary forgotten a few times which engine mount he said it was, I don't want to spend money wasted if he ends up replacing the wrong mount

I would give your friend a wide berth if he can't remember which mount he took screws from...

Is the exhaust all secure?

Maybe your right, I should think about seeing somebody else on jobs he can't remember doing

not sure about the exhaust, could that cause the thud/shake on engine turn off?

I have heard a loose connection around the cat area thud on switch off before on other cars, I could be wrong though and I would welcome feedback from other members on here, if they feel inclined...

I used to get a thud as well, my engine mounts possibly may need replacing, as there was some vibration to the car, though I have to admit, before having the terraclean done, my engine shook like it was naked in the north pole. After the teraclean though, the engine movement was so much more refined, there wasnt anywhere near as much play and the car was more quiet, stopped bumping on shut down and got the torque back,
