Potentially Getting A 7 Seater...

Featured Replies

Whilst this is highly unlikely, the missus wants me to buy a 7 seater for the family, with a third small person on the way, and the car starting to get a bit cramped, I am looking at possibly having to get a second motor...

The missus wants me to chop the mondeo in, though I dont want to be doing 60 mile runs to and from the office in a 7 seater, with only me in it! it cost enough fuel in the CMAX, and to be honest, I doubt my car is going to be worth enough to chuck it in as part ex, or to sell and pay for it seperately. Plus, I dont want to be chucking my car in at all!

So, I have told her its unlikely and she kind of accepts that, but I am curious as to just "how much" more it will cost to run a second car....

The insurance, shouldnt be too much, I even wonder if I can bolt it on to an existing policy under AF and say my Mondeo is the main car, and whatever car I get would be the second car, and would only be driven at weekends, or for the odd week when I am off, so mileage wouldnt really exceed 1500 miles!

The biggest expense beyond that would be tax, and general maintenance I suppose, though running a car for so few miles a year, I would hope that the overall cost would only be fixing the car up in the first instance and just "looking after it" thereon.

if I was to get a second motor, I wouldn't want to spend the earth on it, and higher mileage wouldn't be a problem, as long as the car is in good shape! having already started browsing, I found some as cheap as £400, though when I look at them, they are either vauxhall, or show no indication its had the timing belt changed...

Anyone have any advice on what the overall cost of running a second motor on the weekends would be? I doubt my current insurance policy would cover it, but it would be interesting to see what the cost would be for such a low run vehicle in the year? I would guess around £300 for tax, perhaps £500 for insurance (though I really hope not!) and then parts as and how it comes...

Buy the missus the 7 seater & cycle to work ? :)

60 miles a day, nah your alright, I would be dead by the time I push the pedal lol.

She doesnt drive, which is why it would benefit as it would only be limited miles it would be used for!

Been browsing and it looks like I would need 2k for a reasonable specimen, so she has a very long while to wait!

if I could stomach it, I could get a zafira, there seems to be plenty out there, and the only saving grace would be that I would have the Mondeo for 5 of the 7 days of the week, but then again, I would still have a vauxhall for two days of the week...

I must admit, I came across this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-KIA-CARENS-GS-CRDI-7-SEATS-SPARES-REPAIRS-RUNS-AND-DRIVES-/181879082803?hash=item2a58d68f33

That wouldnt be too bad, if a) I had the money to buy it and b) had the money to repair it, along with all the other running costs lol

S-Max with the Focus ST engine doesn't fall in to budget then :D

I wish matey, it comes to something where, even on a viewing as "highly unlikely to happen any time soon" and the only things that fall in budget are writeoff's (not sure I want to try that route again!) or evils such as this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201509156950617?radius=1500&sort=default&minimum-seats=7&postcode=me72ne&page=1&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&maximum-age=up_to_10_years_old&keywords=timing%20belt&price-to=1500&search-target=usedcars&logcode=p

Whats worse, is the possibility It may be the only thing I could afford if it was that, or give up Mindel...

A Zafira ???????? Wash your mouth out :)

I know, I feel dirty at least with a hint of suicidal... Just done a quick search, tax for 300 insurance for around 600...

you will find some decent mk2 galaxy's out there,

4 x 4 versions are in short supply, but go like a rocket but you need a petrol tanker following you closely.

if you go down the tdi route (galaxy)dont forget to look at alhambra's and sharans as there all mostly vw's anyway.

if you want a sexier looking 7 seater then look at the smax range, certain petrol versions are going quite cheaply now.

i had a zaffy mk1 tdi(cough)it was bomb proof but was no way big enough for us.

Mk4 Mondeo you have? Not big enough for a family with three bairns? That is pish. I have a mk2.5 Focus, with a 12, 11 and 8 year old respectively. And the eldest has Aspergers, with all the sensitivity issues that go with it. Plenty big enough, and the Mondeo is a barge in comparison! Tell your woman that Goodkat says that anything bigger is a waste of time, and if you go down the Zafira route we shall all assume you have forfeited your genitalia and have surrendered to the dark side, and we shall mock you when you are stranded at the side of the road.

Sorry Jeebs, sometimes people need tough love.

She just wants the extra couple of seats for the odd times when the father in law has his car out at work, and I'm here with three kids and then need to get her mum out and about too..

I went through all that debating too, and I came down on the side of going for the Focus, as anything bigger, like you have mentioned, is just dead weight most of the time, and extra cost. I personally would benefit from a seven seater approx 3 times a year. That would have left me with a seven seater for another 362 days where I didn't need seven seats. It was a no-brainer for me and my circumstances!

Is swapping the mondeo in and getting a nice newer say S-max not an option? With the All new S-max just arrived the now (older) shape should drop in price significantly

to be honest, the Mondy nowadays would go for about £1500-£1750, not really enough to get a decent example, and to be honest, even if I did, its still a lot of dead weight for a 60 mile round trip to the office - especially when its just me! thats what I learned through having the CMAX, and the fuel costs were a lot more.

Given the rarity of how often it would be used, if she continues to want it, I might explain that the only viable way to get something we are only going to use for about 6 weeks a year, might be to get an older motor, though she doesnt like the idea of old cars. One is she thinks they are unsafe (lets be fair, many can be!) and the other is, she has never really been in older cars. Mine are the oldest she has been in, and that was 9 year max.

i used to get around 40 mpg out of my tdi galaxy around town by myself, and once had it up to 60mpg on a long run fully loaded, mind you i was driving like miss daisy, but keeping up with every body else on a motorway.

the smax i have averages around 35 for the same journeys.

hell of a lot better then the lexus i bought due to a mid life crisis.:rolleyes: :D

  • Author

Yeah whereas driving like miss daisy at the moment I can average 65mpg on a tank and get 700 - 850 miles on a tank on average. Last one I had a heavy foot and it pulled only 560 miles out the tank though I could have made 620 I chose to top up as it was payday...

but could you get 8 doors in it?

or a king sized bed?

or a sofa and shut the hatch?

its horses for courses m8,ive got 3 kids and when they were couped up in a smaller car it was like world war 3 going off.

put 1 in the back and 2 each side shear bliss.lol

plus you can use it like a van like i do when i carry all my tools etc.

theres always good points and bad to any car you own or drive.

and if you still want to be a boy racer and can afford to run the v6 you get the best of both worlds lol.

Lol yeah I can't be doing that, I have control of the stereo so they won't be getting any music or worse... They will get mine...
