2007 Ford Focus Diesel 1.6 - Loss Of Power

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

So my focus has had a longstanding issue with reduced power. It's not limp mode (it will very occasionally drop into limp mode) but just a lack of power in any gear. The odd thing is, if I, for example, reverse and then put it straight into first with my foot down, it'll go like a bat out of hell all the way through gears 1&2 (road isn't ever long enough to get any higher!) however, as soon as I brake, the power won't come back and on occasion, will be in limp mode for a couple of hundred yards. Any ideas as to the issue here? I've replaced the dpf and fitted an egr blanking plate.

Thanks.

Do you get any warning lights, I had a problem where the car would lose power on hills intermittently turned out to be a crack in one of the intercooler pipes.

The engine management light has been on, can clear it with a code reader but it just pops back up 15 mins later, makes no difference to the way it drives. As I say, it's not like limp mode as you can drive it day to day, you just can't overtake anyone or use the fast lane on the motor ways!! Just seems odd to me, almost as if the turbo isn't giving full power for some reason.

Any codes from the code reader ?

Will get that sorted tomorrow and come back to you. Last time I checked I think it may have been a glow plug fault 0380 possibly if memory serves me but that was about 14 months ago!!

P 0380 refers to possibly a faulty glow plug or associated electrical connection & is likely to cause the vehicle to be difficult to start - which aren't your current symptoms, so a new code would be useful

Actually glow plugs are not used for cold starting on common rail diesel engines, it would have to be ridiculously cold to need them on a CR engine and most likely temps we are unlikely to see here.

The glow plugs are used to aid with DPF regeneration and also for emissions and smoother idling of the engine, so if they are not working properly then it is likely to be in limp home mode, as mine did when they glow plugs needed replacing on mine. If they are not working properly then again DPF regeneration may not complete and the DPF could be getting blocked which would also cause the engine to be suffocated and feel lethargic.

Indeed we need to know what error codes are present to even have a guess.

Usually just needs a new set of glowplugs on this engine.  Occasionally it's a wiring or relay fault.

Thanks, I will get them swapped out.

I managed to swap out the glow plugs, cleared the fault. But in doing so I broke a tube that goes to the injectors, it has an electrical connector on.

Please does anyone know what this part is and is it easy to fit ?

Thanks for any help given.

I can't see exactly which part is broken?

If it's the middle of a fuel pipe, you might be able to sleeve it using a slightly larger silicone hose.  If not, the whole low pressure pipework comes as one assembly and it's not cheap.

Thanks for a quick reply.

I have marked the pipe red, it has the two yellow markings, it should fix down where I put the red dot, this pipe plus two others fit on top with an electrical connector to the right and a couple of pipes going down.

The part with the plug is a fuel temp sensor and comes as part of the pipework assembly linked above.  I still can't see the actual break to determine whether it can be repaired or whether it'll need to be replaced.
