1.6 Cdti Turbo Replacement

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a 06 plate focus fitted with the 1.6 cdti engine. The turbo has blown and im looking to fit a new one. Im no stranger under the bonnet so im looking to do the work myself. As i know this is a common problem for this engine. Im looking for advice on which steps i need to take to carry out the repair. Also, does anyone konw where i can get a refurbished turbo from? I have searched for one but i dont know which companies are better to use etc.

Thanks in advance

I bought a complete new turbo unit for mine off ebay from Dewsbury Auto Spares, it has been perfect for fitting and also been great since I changed it.

However first you need to find out why your turbo has gone as that will affect what work you need to do to change it and ensure the new one does not get damaged again.

At the very least you need to check the oil flow at that banjo bolt, it should be at least 330ml within 1 minute of idling and should not have much carbon particles in it. If there is a lack of oil flow or lots of particles in the oil then its a sump off and clean refit and replace the oil pick up pipe at minimum.

You will also likely want a new v band exhaust clamp and probably new jubilee clips for the hoses as they often break when re tightened.

That's the one I bought from the same seller but it does depend on whether you have the 110bhp or the 90bhp, the 110 has the VNT vane system and the 90bhp has just a standard wastegate system.

Thanks for the quick reply. It was down on power before the turbo went as if the ecu had tripped itself into a safe mode. The dpf was replaced then the turbo went 2 weeks after. I feel that a injector seal is the root cause with some research. Would i have to flush the engine out too? If so, what would you recommend?

I personally would flush the engine with some flushing oil. Was the DPF filter blocked?

If it was then I would be checking the state of the oil for suspended particles of carbon, I would also before starting any work measure the oil flow to the old turbo to see if there is at least 330ml within a minute.

If the oil flow is below par then a new oil pickup tube and sump off and clean the sump job would be required from what I have read here and elsewhere.

I had plenty of oil flow on mine so I didn't bother removing the sump or changing the pickup pipe, mine has been fine since I changed it and it's been a while and I have done quite a bit of mileage since.

Obviously the choice is yours as to what you do or don't do.
