Really Baffled Regarding Mpg, Fuel Economy, Please Help ?

Featured Replies

I have a 2006 mk2 focus 1.8 TDCI

On the form I was given when bought the car, the form was printed from Auto trader. co.uk under technical specifications it reads fuel tank capacity 52.3 litres. I've just filled my car from almost half way to full and it was only 17.83 litres and that was almost from half way, I can't imagine the other half having 34.47 litres ?

Could it be that my 1.8 mk2 focus diesel actually has a smaller tank than 52.3 litres and the form is incorrect somewhere?

Cost £19,02 to drive 185 miles, 70% around town, 30% carriageways and short motorway trips with a very light right foot , I know that is what it cost because from where I filled the tank, tiny bit above half way to full to brim after several clicks, stopped at £17.83 litres at £19,02

Thanks

It is possible that a replacement fuel tank has been fitted in the past, or more likely the fuel gauge sender / sensor is not registering accurately, therefore giving a false reading.

A definitive answer on the fuel tank capacity would be to run the tank as empty as you dare & then fill it up & note the quantity needed to brim it

But how do I know if I were to let it run until the low fuel light comes on, how will I know it is actually low on fuel , as you say the fuel gauge sender may be faulty, so if I were to wait until the low fuel light came on and then filled it to the brim, I wouldn't actually know if the amount of litres from warning light to full was the real amount, as the fuel sender may be faulty and it may have actually been above the reserve to begin with

You have previously stated on one of your other threads that you get approx' 350 miles on a full tank - so I suggest you run it for 340 miles, by which the fuel tank should be nearly empty if the fuel sender / sensor is accurate or not , & then brim it & note the quantity of fuel required

Not quite sure what you mean but meh, I suppose I can try that.

thanks

What I mean is : Fill the fuel tank up . . & then once you've driven approx' 340 miles, by which time the fuel tank should be nearly empty, refill to the brim & note how many litres of fuel are required . . this will therefore give you an idea of fuel tank capacity - give or take a few litres

I don't know how much simpler he could have stated it!!
