Hi all,

I am new on here, looking to get myself a Fiesta 1.4 TDCi soon so figured it was best to sign up and have a look around and ask questions, I have decided to go for the 1.4 tdci (HDi) rather than the 1.6 TDCI as I know that the 1.6HDi engine has quite a few issues around oil/turbo failure etc so will be going with the 1.4TDCi instead.

I do a lot of motorway miles (around 500 miles a week) so am looking for some good economy but also some enjoyable handling which I believe the Fiesta offers - plus the vast range of mods and tweaks etc.

Just thought I would say hi!

hi fella i have had both and do serious milage being a courier, the 1400 tdci was nothing but problem after problem with fuel pipes bursting this led to me trading it in with 136k on the clock for a 1600tdci wow lots more power better MPG by a hell of a lot at 56mph on a motorway run, never missed a beat AT all sold it at 198k miles for a 1600tdci sport van over 100mpg easily achieved.now have a transit courier 1600tdci and can hit 100mpg at 56mph on a long run.

my opinion on the 14tdci is for gran to go shopping in once a week crap mpg and gutless for power.

1600tdci everytime

Thanks for the info, I will look at the 1.6TDCi again then, I know that they are better engines but when fitted to French cars they are usually problematic.

I am fine with mechanical fixes such as the fuel lines/pipes though + injectors, also the pipes will be cheaper to replace than the turbos on the 1.6TDCi and I wouldn't need to worry about the DPF etc.

I don't need the car for power as I will be doing a lot of motorway miles, just wary about the 1.6TDCi (1.6 HDi) engine as it is a really good engine, just has issues with turbos and oil.

The 1.4TDCi fuel leaks seem to be from the clear plastic lines and the fuel filter, they don't seem to hard to replace if needed as they are kinda a serviceable item as they will degrade over time.

The DV6TED4 engine is problematic no matter which car it's in, as it has an inherent design fault very well documented by literally thousands of comments regarding serious issues across all the Ford & other marques forums over many years

This engine needs O.C.D. servicing & as documented by real owners a few modifications too to ensure reliability, & even a FFSH does not guarantee this engine will perform as it should

Google : DV6TED4 engine problems - for endless pages of information

The DV6TED4 engine is problematic no matter which car it's in, as it has an inherent design fault very well documented by literally thousands of comments regarding serious issues across all the Ford forums over many years

This engine needs O.C.D. servicing & as documented by real owners a few modifications too to ensure reliability, & even a FFSH does not guarantee this engine will perform as it should

This is why I want to steer clear of this engine and is why I am wanting to go with the 1.4 TDCi, I believe there are 2 versions of the DV4 TD which is 8v, and the DV4 TED4 which I believe is the later 16v and fitted with a VNT turbo. Looking at the engine bay photos on the Fiesta 1.4TDCi I believe it uses the simpler 8v version of the engine.

As I said before, I am happy to change over seals and pipes on the engine, I am aware that the 1.4 TDCi won't be the most thrilling of drives, but I am not looking for power, just to get from A to B. I am also hoping to upgrade the suspension at some point as well which will be a bit of fun when I do come to some corners.

I have had a look at a lot of different engines and the 1.4TDCi engine seems to be the least worst diesel engine I have come across which is why I think I will go for it and find one with a good service history. I will be doing a full oil and filter change as soon as I get it anyway, plus check everything over, take the inlet manifold off to clean the EGR gunk out of it plus check injectors.

I think the 1.6TDCi/1.6HDi engine is a great engine when it works, it just seems to go bang and be very expensive to sort out when it does go wrong.

Blanking the EGRV would be a wise move too

I have done this on all of the diesels I have owned, much better throttle response and the inlets remain clean to retain the engine's efficiency, usually the only mods I do is a few breathing mods (usually removing restrictive air box snorkels), EGR blanking and a good service. Currently driving a Clio 1.5 DCi (80) which has started to have a few electrical issues at 137k miles, it does on average 76mpg, has been as high as 83mpg.

Looking to get a Fiesta as I am wanting a slightly newer car with a bit more kit and comfort, the Clio is fine but the wind noise isn't the best etc.
