Ford Ka Help Needed - Surging Engine.

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I've just joined as I really need some advice about my girlfriends car that is starting to drive me MAD.

She has a 1.3 ford KA, registered in 2006 so it has the duratec engine. ever since she owned it the thing will randomly start to surge, usually when you dip the clutch after driving and it attempts to return to idle it never cuts out or stalls. you can be driving fine, you get to a junction so slow down and break dip the clutch the engine's revs hold high for 2 seconds then drop and as they drop it starts to surge / pulse / hunt (call it what you will).

I've read on line so far it could be a fuel filter, MAF / MAP sensor, Power Steering sensor, Idle control valve, throttle body.

We've had it at two separate garages who have yet to find a problem either mechanically or electrically (no engine light or fault codes) and annoyingly when the car is taken to them it never shows the problem she gets.

short on blowing a pack of cash on a pile of new parts which i'd prefer to avoid, could someone give me an idea of why this car surges and how to resolve it.

also after driving the car for two days I've realized how horrid the brakes are on the car and would like to keep my loved one (my GF not the car) safe and sound, what sort of conversions / swaps are out there for this car that will give it some serious bite ? from what I've seen so far it has the Fiesta engine in it so could I also swap out some fiesta calipers and discs for it? i'm guessing its not that easy tho.

thanks in advance for any advice or help you can provide.

When was the car last fully serviced ?

When was the car last fully serviced ?

Depends on what you class as a full service, but I tend to look after the cars for servicing oil, filters, brakes etc it would have been mid last year and it was doing it then as well ive gone over the car with carb cleaner looking for air leaks and not found any so far

When were the leads, coils and plugs replaced? I wonder if one or multiple of these are broken?

Don't know when and will check them, however its worth mentioning the car runs perfectly no stutter, hesitation or mis fire which is associate with plugs or leads generally.

true, so also worth checking the fuel filter and replacing it, if the plugs et al are in excellent nick.
